Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a crossbreed of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. It is a relatively new hybrid that first appeared in the United States in the 1950s. The Cockapoo is touted for having the friendly, easy-going nature of the Cocker Spaniel as well as the intelligence and minimal shedding of the Poodle. They have a low-shedding coat which makes them easy to groom and maintain. Cockapoos come in a range of colors and sizes, including miniature, toy and standard.
Cockapoos are considered to be low-shedding when compared to other dogs. They are a breed of hybrid, sometimes referred to as a designer dog. They are a result of crossing a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. The Poodle is usually a Toy or Miniature Poodle, resulting in a smaller-sized Cockapoo. Both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles have a reputation for having low-shedding coats, which can benefit people looking for a pet with minimal shedding.
Cockapoos should not be fed human foods such as fats, proteins, and sugars. Many of these are unhealthy for the dog and can lead to weight gain or nutritional deficiencies. Additionally, certain foods are poisonous and/or can cause allergic reactions ranging from mild to severe. Items to avoid include grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chives, avocados, alcohol, chocolate, sugar, salt, and macadamia nuts. To ensure proper nutrition, a balanced and varied diet that consists of appropriate foods for a Cockapoo should be fed.
When getting ready to welcome a Cockapoo into your life, there are a few essentials that you should have on hand before bringing your pup home. Of course, you'll want to pick up food & treats that meet the nutritional needs of your new pet, as well as toys that you know they will enjoy. You should also consider getting a few accessories, such as a dog bed for them to sleep in, a collar and leash for walks, and a waste collection bag for clean-up.
Cockapoos are often considered to be medium-sized dogs rather than large. Generally speaking, they typically grow to weigh between 15 to 20 pounds and measure around ten inches tall from the shoulder. Although this breed may be small in stature, they certainly make up for it in personality. These friendly and outgoing pooches love to be the center of attention, and their affectionate natures make them great family pets. With their intelligence, obedience and loyalty, Cockapoos are definitely a breed that stands out in a big way, even if they might seem small in size.
Cockapoos need a moderate amount of exercise every day. To stay healthy and fit, a daily walk of at least 30 minutes should be sufficient. While these little dogs don't need a lot of intensive physical activity, if they don't get enough exercise, they can become irritable and develop problem behaviors. Making sure they get enough mental stimulation is also important in addition to physical activity. Games such as fetch and tug-of-war can help develop and maintain muscle tone. Keep in mind that regular obedience training can also provide valuable mental exercise which can also help keep your pup healthy.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are very friendly and social dogs that make excellent family pets. They are intelligent, affectionate, and loyal making them a great companion for both children and adults. Cockapoos also have a low-shedding low-dander coat that doesn't require much maintenance, so they're perfect for people who suffer from allergies. These pups are also easy to train and generally very well-behaved, so they're a great choice for any family. Aside from these characteristics, their size and playfulness make them absolutely perfect for families with small children.
The amount of time you need to devote to training your Cockapoo depends on your individual pup! Generally, you should aim for at least two 15-20 minute sessions per day as well as opportunities for reinforcement (with lots of positive reinforcement!). This could include shorter activities such as playtime and puzzle toys, or teaching them tricks such as 'sit', 'paw', or 'stay'. Whatever you do, make sure to keep them engaged and motivated and to include lots of treats in order for the training to be most effective.
