Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a designer crossbreed first created by combining a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They are considered to be a hybrid or designer dog, as they are not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club. However, Cockapoos can be registered with the American Canine Hybrid Club, the International Cockapoo Club, and the Cockapoo Club of America. Physically, Cockapoos can exhibit characteristics from either parent, including a wide range of sizes, colors, and textures of coats.
The Cockapoo coat is generally low-shedding and has a mix of soft, wavy curls, though there can be variations depending on the parents and the genetics of the puppy. On average, the coat is anywhere from a couple of inches to four or five inches in length. Whether you're looking for a long-haired or short-haired variety, this breed is sure to please.
Cockapoos should not be fed any type of human food, as this carries the risk of developing unhealthy eating habits like overeating. Foods containing large amounts of sugar, like sweets and chocolate, should also be avoided as sugar is detrimental to their health. In addition, processed, canned, or prepackaged human food may contain unhealthy preservatives and additives that can make your Cockapoo sick.
Before getting a Cockapoo, it's important to make sure you have everything they will need for a comfortable life. First, a vet should be consulted to determine which vaccinations are needed. Next, appropriate food and treats for the puppy should be bought, as well as dog toys and chews. Of course, a collar and leash should be bought, along with a proper-fitting and properly ventilated crate. Finally, dog bedding that suits the pup's individual needs should be purchased.
The size of your Cockapoo puppy will depend on a variety of factors, such as their lineage and the type of Cockapoo you have chosen. Generally speaking, Cockapoos reach full size by the age of 12 to 18 months, although some may take longer or shorter depending on the individual. On average, Miniature/Toy Cockapoos measure between 9-14 inches, while Small Cockapoos measure between 14-17 inches. Medium Cockapoos measure between 17-19 inches, and Large Cockapoos measure between 19-21 inches.
Cockapoos are an active breed and need a fair bit of exercise on a regular basis. Depending on the age and size of your Cockapoo, they should receive daily walks of 30 minutes to an hour in length or an equivalent amount of playtime. Your Cockapoo may require more or less depending on their individual needs. It's important to monitor your Cockapoo to ensure they are getting enough exercise, and not overdoing it, so they remain fit and healthy.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are an excellent choice for first-time owners because they are low-maintenance, well-behaved, and incredibly loving. Cockapoos are highly intelligent and eager to please, making housebreaking and obedience training much simpler than with some other breeds. As they get along well with both children and other animals, they are a great choice for households with varying ages and lifestyles. This breed adapts easily and can be trained to meet any level of need for attention and affection.
Training a Cockapoo can be a rewarding experience, particularly if you take the time to understand the breed. While highly intelligent and eager to please, these active dogs may take more patience to train than some others as they can be easily distracted and have a bit of an independent streak. However, with some consistency and positive reinforcement they can learn quickly and respond well to obedience training. Steps such as providing designated areas for your Cockapoo to sleep and chew, teaching basic commands, and providing ample exercise opportunities will all contribute to successful training.
