Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a mix of two beloved dog breeds, the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, making them the perfect mix of intelligence, loyalty, and playfulness. These intelligent dogs are clever enough to quickly learn tricks, and they bond very quickly to their owners. Cockapoos are extremely patient, which makes them great therapy dogs or the perfect pet for small kids. Furthermore, they have minimal shedding, are generally non-aggressive, and come in a variety of colors and sizes.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos can be considered hypoallergenic but not always. It really depends on the individual dog and the severity of the person's allergies. Cockapoos are a cross between a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel, and because of this cross-breeding, they typically do not shed much hair, which makes them more suitable for people with allergies. However, any dog can produce dander, which can trigger allergies, and while some Cockapoos may trigger a reaction among people with allergies, other Cockapoos may not.
Cockapoos require a balanced, nutrient-rich diet for optimal health. High-quality dry kibble is an excellent source of protein and carbohydrates, along with vitamins and minerals important for maintaining good health. Depending on their size, most Cockapoos require 1/2 to 1cup of food, split into 2-3 feedings per day, and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks. Avoid processed human foods or dog treats as they may contain artificial ingredients or unhealthy fats.
Before getting a Cockapoo, it's essential to stock up on puppy food, a collar and leash, plenty of chew toys, nail clippers and puppy treats as well as dog shampoo. You should also purchase a crate and bedding for the crate, an exercise pen, and an assortment of chew-toys to help the puppy cope with teething. Having a flea and tick preventative on hand is a must as is heartworm preventative, and it's essential to have plenty of dog bowls for food and water.
Cockapoos are considered small-medium dogs, typically ranging in size anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds and 10 to 15 inches in height when fully grown. Some may even grow larger depending on the size of the parents, but most Cockapoos, regardless of parent size, will not exceed 20 pounds. It is possible for a Cockapoo to be a little larger than the standard, but this usually only happens when their parents both come from larger-sized parents.
Walking your Cockapoo is an important part of their health and wellbeing. Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is to give your pet 30 minutes of exercise a day. This could include a mixture of a leisurely walk and playing a few games with your pup's favorite toys. If possible, break this up into two 15-minute walks to prevent them from getting tired or over-excited. Every Cockapoo is different, so once you have established a regular walking routine you can experiment to see what works best for you and your four-legged friend.
Cockapoos can make great pets for first-time owners! Since Cockapoos are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, they tend to have an easy-going temperament, low shedding and low barking. Although they do require regular grooming, Cockapoos can adapt well to whatever living situation they are placed in provided that they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. Additionally, Cockapoos can be highly trainable and are often very responsive to positive reinforcement techniques. Thus, they can make a rewarding experience for those looking to become a first-time pet owner.
Training a Cockapoo can be quite straightforward and easier to undertake as compared to other breeds due to its intelligence and natural capacity to pick up commands quickly. However, that does not mean the training process should be taken lightly because, like all breeds, Cockapoos need consistency and structure in order to really learn the commands that are being taught to them. Taking the time to research and familiarize yourself with the breed's traits and abilities is the best way to ensure you are setting up your Cockapoo for success.
