Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are amazing animals! They are a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, so they possess some of the best qualities of both breds, and tend to have incredibly loyal, loving personalities. Their adaptability is truly remarkable; Cockapoos can be just as at home at a party full of people as they are cuddled up on the couch. Plus, their intelligence and trainability make them an especially ideal breed for families with children. And then, of course, there’s their wonderfully unique physical characteristics.
Cockapoos are considered a low-shedding dog breed, making them a popular choice for pet owners who prefer a pooch that does not leave behind loads of fur. Cockapoos typically have thicker, wavier coats than other dogs and shed very little compared to many other dogs. It is important to understand, however, that all dog breeds shed, even the best non-shedding canines. While Cockapoos have minimal shedding, regular grooming and occasional brushing is necessary to keep their coats in good condition, and care should be taken to properly maintain their coats.
Cockapoos should not be fed chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, or anything else containing xylitol, as these items can be poisonous to dogs. Other unsuitable foods include processed meats, raw eggs, raw fish, nuts, and salty snacks. If opting for raw food, it is strongly recommended to talk to your veterinarian first as there are safety risks associated with it such as parasites and bacteria. Additionally, Cockapoos should not be given table scraps, as these are notorious for resulting in behavioral problems or digestive issues.
Before you bring your new Cockapoo home, make sure you have all the necessary supplies to make sure their transition into your home is smooth and comfortable. Begin by getting a crate or carrier to make sure your pup has a safe den to retreat to when feeling anxious or if you need to confine them for a short time. Next, get the basics, such as toys, chew items, a collar and leash, and food and water bowls. Make sure your home is puppy-proofed by moving potentially hazardous items like electrical cords and houseplants out of your pup’s reach.
Yes, Cockapoos are usually considered small dogs. Generally, these dogs grow to a maximum of 15 inches at the shoulder, although some larger specimens do exist. Cockapoos are hybrid dogs containing both Cocker Spaniel and Poodle ancestry. Their size varies depending on the size of their parents, but usually these dogs are around 10 to 15 inches at the shoulder and 10 to 25 pounds in weight. Cockapoos make great lap dogs and their small size makes them very manageable for pet parents who don't have a lot of space or don't want something too big.
Cockapoos need quite a bit of exercise in order to stay healthy and be happy. Depending on age and size, they should get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This could include activities like running, walking, and playing. Additionally, mental stimulation through activities like puzzle toys or brain games can help Cockapoos stay active and engaged. If they do not get enough exercise, they can suffer from behavioral issues such as excessive barking, aggression, and destructive behavior. Providing your Cockapoo with an appropriate amount of exercise will help them live a long, healthy life.
Cockapoos are generally known for being excellent family dogs, especially around children. They are a hybrid of the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle breeds, and both are known to be friendly, good-natured, and eager-to-please. This makes them perfect companions for kids who are seeking a loyal and loving pet. Cockapoos can be very patient and gentle, so they are excellent for teaching kids responsibility and kindness. Furthermore, their average size and easy-to-groom coats make them ideal for smaller living spaces and easier maintenance for children.
The amount of time required to train a Cockapoo can vary depending on the age of the dog, the breed, and the behavior you wish to train. Generally speaking, you should plan to spend at least 15 minutes per day, 3 or 4 times per week engaging in positive reinforcement training with your Cockapoo and another 10 to 15 minutes each day teaching commands. If your Cockapoo is still a pup, then you should allow more time to devote to training to ensure your pooch is properly socialized and learns basic commands such as sit, stay, and come.
