Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are incredibly interesting dogs! The combination of two very different breeds, Cocker Spaniels and Poodles, grants them a variety of unique characteristics. Cockapoos have gentle, but playful personalities, making them a wonderful companion for both children and adults. They also have hypoallergenic coats which require minimal grooming, and happen to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds due to their Poodle heritage.
Cockapoos typically have a thick, curly or wavy coat that may have a mix of both their Poodle and Cocker Spaniel parents' coat features. Though there can be a wide range of colors and textures for this breed, most coats are generally soft and may range from being short to medium in length. Cockapoos do not require much trimming, but their coats will need regular brushing, bathing, and sometimes clipping over the ears and paws. Those with thick curls may need added effort to avoid matting.
Cockapoos should not be fed anything containing chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, as it can be toxic to them. Grapes, raisins, and fruits with pits should also be avoided, as these can all cause intestinal blockage. Onions, garlic, and Chives are rarely found in pet food but should still be avoided, as they may cause anemia. Likewise, nuts should be kept away from Cockapoos, especially macadamia nuts which can be particularly hazardous.
Before purchasing a Cockapoo, it is essential to consider all the items that you will need for it. You should purchase items such as a bed, collars and leashes, toys, food and water dishes, food, and grooming tools like brushes and clippers. You may also want to invest in a crate and playpen for when you are not able to supervise your dog, as well as pet stairs or a ramp in case your pup has any trouble with stairs.
Cockapoos are not generally considered big dogs, although their size varies and is dependent on which parent breeds are used in the mix. Typically, adult Cockapoos range in size from 10 to 20 pounds and up to 15 inches in height. In comparison to larger breeds, Cockapoos are of a much more manageable size and are popular with apartment dwellers due to their smaller physical stature and relatively low energy levels. Cockapoos also have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, sound sensitive, and social.
Cockapoos are known for their high energy level, so it's important to provide them with daily exercise. Depending on the age and activity level of the Cockapoo, a good rule of thumb is approximately one hour of exercise per day. This should include a combination of physical and mental activities like walking, running, fetching, playing, tugging, and agility courses, as well as puzzles, training, and memory exercises.
Generally, Cockapoos get along well with other pets if they are introduced to them gradually. Because they are congenial, cheerful, and often eager to please, they tend to accept new animals into their homes over time. It is important, however, for the Cockapoo to be trained properly and for the owners to socialize their dog properly, in order to build up their confidence and prevent them from becoming timid and scared of other animals.
The amount of time you need to train your Cockapoo per day will depend on several factors such as its age, breed characteristics, and the level of training you want to achieve. Ideally, daily training should consist of around 15 minutes of intensive lessons, followed by several shorter opportunities throughout the day to practice the skills learned that day, supplementing up to 30 minutes. However, if you are aiming for more advanced training, you may require a more extended length of time which could be up to 45 minutes to an hour per day on average.
