Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are often referred to as "designer dogs" because they are the result of crossbreeding a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They have a lowshedding coat, so they are an ideal breed for those with allergies and can typically live for 1215 years. The colors of Cockapoos are quite varied based on their parentage and can range from whites, creams, and reds, to black and chocolate. They have a reputation for being intelligent and athletic and make loyal and affectionate pets.
Many people with allergies find that Cockapoos are an excellent choice of pet as they often cause very mild reactions compared to other breeds. Each individual can respond differently to Cockapoos but most do not find that the breed causes anything more than mild irritation. That being said, the best way to determine whether or not you have an allergy to Cockapoos is to spend time with them and observe any reactions that you have. If you do develop any reactions, your doctor can diagnose them and provide treatment if necessary.
Cockapoos should never be fed raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, and any other type of human food that is high in sugar and/or fat. Additionally, Cockapoos should also avoid chocolate, raw eggs, raw dough, bones and any other type of chew toys and/or treats that are not specifically formulated as dog food. Cockapoos should not even sample these products as they can be toxic and cause digestive distress. Instead, feed your Cockapoo its appropriate daily dose of high-quality dog food, formulated specifically for their size and activity level.
Before getting a Cockapoo, it is essential to invest in the necessary items to make sure your pup is comfortable in its new home. You will need a collar with a leash, food and water bowls, food that is specific to your Cockapoo's needs, puppy shampoo, potty pads, grooming supplies, durable toys, a crate or bed, and puppy treats. Beyond these basics, you may also be interested in a few additional items like pet steps for furniture, a pet stroller, and toys to prevent your pup from becoming bored.
Cockapoos typically grow up to 18-25 pounds in weight and usually measure 10-15 inches from the ground to the top of their shoulder blades. They are considered small-sized dogs, but they have been known to be slightly larger in some cases. Cockapoos are usually categorized as either "toy size" (which is under 12 pounds) or "miniatures" (which is 12-25 pounds).
Cockapoos are known to be quite an active breed of canine. They are a crossbreed of the American Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle that is known for its high energy levels. Despite their small size of anywhere from 10-23 pounds, Cockapoos make excellent running, jogging, and hiking companions, while also being energetic enough to keep their owners moving. Because they are smart, loyal, and energetic, Cockapoos require plenty of daily exercise to stay in shape. Without it, they can become destructive and difficult to handle.
Generally, Cockapoos get along very well with children! They are known for being exceptionally friendly dogs that thrive in a family setting. They tend to have a pleasant and tolerant behavior, making them good playmates for kids, and they enjoy getting affection and love from people of all ages. As long as the child knows how to interact properly with a dog, a Cockapoo can be a reliable and wonderful companion. It is still advisable for children to be supervised by an adult when interacting with any dog to ensure the best possible outcome.
Cockapoos are smart, inspirational dogs that can be trained with patience and positive reinforcement. You'll want to start by training one or two basic commands. Start small, and offer consistent reward to your pet when they are successful. Cockapoos are typically eager to please, so by providing praise or treats when they've done something correctly, you can help encourage them to build good habits. Along with these commands, also establish a behavior appropriate to your building’s environment. Make sure to keep playtime enjoyable, and avoid getting angry or frustrated when mistakes are made.
