Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are truly unique breeds as they demonstrate the qualities of both parent breeds. Cockapoos have a dual-natured temperament, combining the intelligence and sociability of the Poodle with the gentleness and loving nature of the Cocker Spaniel. This unique combination makes Cockapoos an ideal companion for families who seek an affectionate and intelligent companion, but may not have the knowledge and time to commit to raising and training a purebred Cocker Spaniel or Poodle.
Cockapoos are surprisingly non-shedding dogs, making them a popular choice for individuals and families with allergies. Studies have shown that these hybrid dogs, a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, possess a gene combination that drastically reduces the amount of fur they shed. While they have a thick coat, the fur does not escape the coat as it does in a more shedding breed of dog. This helps to keep floors, couches, and other furniture much cleaner.
Cockapoos should not be fed foods that contain lots of sugar, such as candy and other sweets, because the high sugar content can cause dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. They should also avoid unhealthy snacks like potato chips, french fries, and other cooked treats that are high in fat and salt, as these can cause weight gain and other health problems. Certain types of bones can also be very dangerous to give to a Cockapoo as they can splinter and cause intestinal obstructions or other health issues.
Before you bring home your new Cockapoo, it is important to prepare your home to ensure that your pup's needs are met. Start by purchasing the essentials, such as a comfortable bed, toys, food and water dishes, and perhaps some training pads if you are crate-training your pup. Additionally, create a safe area to confine your pup when needed. Puppy-proof your home by looking for and removing any objects that could be hazardous to your pup, such as wires, chemicals, or small items that may be choking risks.
Cockapoos are not always considered to be large dogs. While some Cockapoos can reach 20 pounds or more, other members of the breed remain relatively small. Some Cockapoos are considered to be within the size range for "toy" breeds, with adults weighing approximately 10 pounds or less. Size and weight of individual Cockapoos vary depending on several factors such as diet, activity level, and parent breeds. On average, Cockapoos generally range from 10 20 pounds, making them an ideal companion dog size.
Cockapoos are an active breed, so they should get at least one hour of exercise a day. That can either be a long walk, some playtime in the yard, or even an agility course. To ensure a Cockapoo gets enough exercise, it’s important to provide them with regular opportunities to get out and about. If the weather isn’t suitable for outdoor activities, providing plenty of toys and chew treats to play with will help keep them physically and mentally stimulated.
Cockapoos have a natural affinity for children and it is not uncommon for them to be very attached to their human families, including the youngest members of the household. They typically temperamentally suit families with children quite well, as they have a gentle, loving nature that pairs nicely with an eagerness to please. Cockapoos are loyal and affectionate companions, often willingly joining in the fun activities children dream up. As long as they are socialized appropriately during their formative years, and owners set boundaries and provide consistent training, Cockapoos and kids can often make an ideal match.
Training your Cockapoo is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. There are several tips you can follow to help you get the most out of your training. Firstly, you need to be consistent and make sure your Cockapoo is receiving the same message, regardless of who is delivering it. Start with basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’, and ‘down’ and move on to more difficult ones as your Cockapoo’s understanding develops.
