Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a popular hybrid breed created by crossing a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle. They're known for their intelligence, loyalty, and gentle personalities. Fun facts about Cockapoos include that they tend to have low to non-shedding coats, making them ideal for owners with allergies; they often have amazing personalities, ranging from energetic and clever to loving and mellow; and they come in several sizes and colors. While not recognized by the American Kennel Club, Cockapoos are a continuously popular breed for many pet owners looking for a loving companion.
The Cockapoo coat is very soft and dense like a teddy bear, often wavy and between two to eight inches in length. The texture can range from shaggy to silky, depending on the lineage, and its color is typically a combination of both the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle parent's coloration. Some popular coat colors include tan and white, red and white, black and tan, black and white, or shades of black, yellow, or brown.
Cockapoos tend to have healthy appetites, and they usually don't require special dietary needs compared to many other breeds. However, due to their size, many veterinarians will recommend a diet of slightly higher-calorie kibble than what would be used for a larger dog. Additionally, cockapoos have a relatively high metabolism compared to some other breeds, so if your cockapoo seems to be losing weight, its likely a sign that you should increase the amount of food you give it each day.
Before getting a Cockapoo, you should make sure you have all the essentials to provide them with a happy and healthy life. Some items to consider include a well-made collar, leash, and ID tag; a bed or cushion to sleep on; quality food and water dishes; brush, comb, and other grooming tools; a carrier and/or crate; and plenty of toys for playtime and exercise. Additionally, you should research and purchase the appropriate type of food, as well as food supplements that may benefit your dog’s health.
Cockapoos are considered small dogs, typically ranging in size from as small as 6-10 pounds to sometimes as large as 15-25 pounds at their fully-grown adult size. They are hybrid dogs bred from a combination of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, with their small size being a consistent trait in close to every Cockapoo puppy. Since Cockapoos can come in a wide variety of colors and sizes, it's important to consult a veterinarian or breeder to confirm how large a particular puppy will grow.
It is recommended that Cockapoos receive a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise per day. This can include a combination of walks, runs, and playtime. It is important to give your Cockapoo ample opportunity to exercise and stay active. If you don't have access to an open space that is safe for your pup to run around in, a minimum of a 30-minute daily walk should be done. Walking is a great way to keep your Cockapoo healthy and fit, both physically and mentally.
Cockapoos are an excellent choice for first-time owners as they are intelligent, loving, and have low to moderate exercise and grooming needs. They will look to their owners to provide them with the stimulation, social interaction, and guidance they need to become well-rounded dogs. Cockapoos can live happily in apartments as they don't need large yards, and behavior training can help them adjust to any living situation. When it comes to temperament, they are typically friendly towards people and other animals, so they can easily integrate into a busy family lifestyle.
Training a Cockapoo is best done with consistency, positive reinforcement, and patience. The key is to catch your pup behaving properly, and reward them for it. Begin by teaching them basic commands such as "sit", "stay", and "come". Start with simple commands and gradually increase the complexity as your Cockapoo gets more advanced. Be sure to use positive reinforcement and offer rewards such as treats or verbal reassurance when they get it right. Encourage good behavior and provide negative consequences for bad behavior in order to discourage this type of behavior in the future.
