Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle. They are energetic and loyal companions. They enjoy being around their family, playing both indoors and outdoors, and learning new tricks. A Cockapoo needs regular grooming to keep their coat healthy, so it's important to brush them frequently. Otherwise, their thick, wavy coat can become matted. These dogs are friendly and can socialize with children and other pets. They do not require much space, so they are a great choice for small homes or apartments.
Cockapoos are not non-shedding dogs, but they do tend to shed much less than other breeds of dogs, primarily because of their hybrid genetics. Since Cockapoos are a mix of the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, their coats tend to "pair" the low shed of the Poodle with the low-allergenic quality of the Cocker Spaniel. The mix of two different breeds make for a coat that will typically shed much less than any of the breeds from only which it came.
Cockapoos benefit from dog foods that are formulated with high-quality proteins and carbohydrates that help support healthy skin and coat, joint health, and digestion. It's best to look for foods with natural ingredients instead of fillers, by-products, and artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. For Cockapoos, a diet of kibble supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables, and proteins such as cooked chicken is ideal. You can also give your Cockapoo homemade food for special occasions or as an occasional treat.
Preparing your home for your new Cockapoo can be both an exciting and challenging task. Firstly, your home should be fully puppy-proofed with all possible hazards and objects out of reach to prevent your puppy from coming to harm. Next, you'll need to make sure that your Cockapoo has their own sleeping area to sleep in with enough space to be comfortable, and that any necessary accessories such as a bed and blankets are purchased. Additionally, be sure to stock up on food, treats, toys, and other supplies that your puppy may need.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, from Toy to Standard. Toy Cockapoos usually weigh between 6 and 12 pounds and stand between 8 and 10 inches at the withers. Miniature Cockapoos typically weigh 12-20 pounds and stand between 10-15 inches at the withers. Standard Cockapoos usually range between 20-60+ pounds and stand between 15-20 inches at the withers. Generally, smaller dogs live longer, so picking a smaller sized Cockapoo means you may have your pup in your life for a longer period of time.
Yes, it's possible to take your Cockapoo running; however, since they don't have the same endurance and pace as a more athletic breed, proper preparation and expectations are important. A Cockapoo isn't built for long distance running, but they will enjoy a leisurely jog with their humans. Before running with your Cockapoo, be sure to pay a visit to the veterinarian to check their heart, joints, overall health and discuss any additional precautions you may need to take for running together.
Cockapoos are an excellent choice for families, as they are loyal, loving, and happy-go-lucky dogs who enjoy spending time with the people they love. They are also clever and eager to please, making them easy to train and fairly easy to housebreak. They have a friendly demeanor and typically get along well with children, other dogs, and even cats. Cockapoos are also relatively low-maintenance and don't require a lot of grooming, which is great for busy family households.
Training a Cockapoo is relatively easy as long as you are consistent and use positive reinforcement methods. This breed of dog is quite intelligent and typically highly motivated, which can make the training process much simpler. Of course, as with any breed, some Cockapoos might take longer to learn commands than their counterparts. Regardless, the main focus should be to remain patient and keep a positive attitude as you help your pup learn. The most important step is to start slow and start simple, gradually building up to more complex tasks.
