Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are one of the world's most popular breeds of designer dog, renowned for their intelligence, trainability, and loving personalities. This cross-breed is a hybrid of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, and generally come in two size varieties – Toy and Miniature. Cockapoos live between 12 to 15 years, and require regular grooming to stay looking their best. Additionally, these gentle, active dogs need regular exercise, mental stimulation, and plenty of love and attention.
The Cockapoo is renowned for its unique coat. It is generally a mix of two different coats, the Cocker Spaniel coat and the Poodle coat. Cockapoos usually have a single or double coat and can be either wavy or curly. On average, the Cockapoo will have low to low-to-medium shedding when properly groomed and bathed. The colors can range from black, white, chocolate, cream, golden, apricot, and red. Different colors may have white markings on the toes, chest, muzzle, or other parts of the dog.
Cockapoos have mostly moderate energy levels and a variety of dietary needs, depending on their age. In general, Cockapoos require a high-quality diet of lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and essential fatty acids in order to stay healthy and active. It is important to make sure that any dog food you provide your Cockapoo is made from organic ingredients and that it meets the standards of the Association of American Feed Control Officials.
Before getting a Cockapoo, there are definitely some essentials you should buy. This includes a comfortable and sturdy crate that is large enough for your pup to move around in, toys and chew items, a few different types of leashes, a collar with ID tags, age-appropriate food, bowls for water and food, nail clippers, both a hard and soft brush, a pet shampoo, and a toothbrush and toothpaste. Additionally, it's important to make sure you have permission from your landlord if you are renting or permission from your condo board if you are residing in a condo.
Cockapoos vary in size from toy to large, so it depends on the size of the parent breeds involved. Generally, a Cockapoo will be considered a medium-sized dog, though under certain circumstances it can range from a small to a large size. Cockapoos are often bred with the Toy Poodle, which is known for being a small breed. However, when bred with the Standard Poodle, the Cockapoo can reach a size which some would consider large.
The amount of exercise you should give your Cockapoo will depend on a number of factors including age, breed, health, and the living environment. Generally speaking, a Cockapoo should walk for 30 to 60 minutes each day. If they are living in an apartment, you can take them out five to ten times to avoid long walks. If they are an active breed, they could require longer walks or more intense exercise. Use a combination of walks and play to ensure your Cockapoo stays fit and healthy.
