Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid crossbreed that is created from a combination of the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. It is not recognized as an official breed by any major kennel club, and because it is a "mixed breed," it is not classified as a single breed. The Cockapoo is typically considered to be a "designer dog" and may come in various sizes and colors, depending on the breed from which it is descended.
A Cockapoo coat can vary depending on the particular pooch. If the parents are Poodle and Cocker Spaniel, the coat will typically be a mix of textures and can usually be very soft though they can also be quite curly for those with more Poodle genes. Generally speaking, it's a medium length coat that is okay with minimal brushing and grooming, making them a great breed for those who don't have time to invest in constant upkeep.
A Cockapoo is a fun-loving and active breed of dog that requires an appropriate diet to meet their energy needs. A high-quality dry food formulated for smaller breed dogs is an excellent option; however, if you wish to feed wet food as well, there are plenty of delicious options available for your pup. Dogs with food allergies and sensitivities will require special diet considerations. In addition to the nutrient-rich dog food, your Cockapoo can also enjoy occasional treats.
Before getting a Cockapoo, you should make sure you have all the essential items you need to care for them.
Cockapoos range in size from very small toy-sized dogs to medium-sized dogs. Standards are usually between 45-60cm and can weigh up to 15kg, whereas toys are usually less than 30cm and weigh up to 4kg. There are also Giant Cockapoos which weigh in at over 20kg and can be up to 75cm in size, although this is quite rare.
Cockapoos require moderate to high levels of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. They need daily, vigorous activity to maintain their enthusiastic, playful nature. Ideal activities for a Cockapoo include long leash walks, exploring parks and woodlands, and active play sessions. Training is also beneficial to stimulate their minds as well as help them build obedience and coordination. Additionally, a few minutes of playtime during the day also helps provide the mental and physical stimulation they crave. The amount of exercise your specific Cockapoo needs will depend on their age, size, and health.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos tend to get along well with other pets as long as they are introduced slowly, and with patience. They are social creatures, and if socialized early in life, they can make wonderful companions for other animals. When considering introducing Cockapoos to another pet, one should bear in mind that, because of their active nature, Cockapoos need companion animals that can keep up with them. They don't interact well with more sedentary pets, such as cats, that aren't interested in exercising or playing.
Training a Cockapoo can definitely be a rewarding experience, but it certainly requires dedication and patience on the part of the trainer. Cockapoos are relatively intelligent and eager to please, so they tend to pick up on commands, tricks, and good habits quicker than some other breeds. However, as with any pet, consistency and repetition are key in order to ensure successful and lasting results. You may need to plan ahead in order to continuously reinforce the type of behavior you are looking to obtain.
