Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are one of the most popular hybrid breeds, and while they're relatively new additions to the canine world, they've carved out a niche as loyal, intelligent, and affectionate pets. One of the most interesting things about Cockapoos is the range of temperaments and look that they can offer. As a hybrid, the Cockapoo can take features from both its parent breeds, the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, and you can get some single-coated, double-coated, curly-haired, or shaggy-haired family members.
Cockapoos are a hybrid breed that are an intentional and purposeful mix between a Poodle and an English or American Cocker Spaniel. While many people turn to the Cockapoo because of the belief that they are hypoallergenic, the truth is that there is no 100% guarantee that they would not cause an allergic reaction. There is no dog breed that is absolutely hypoallergenic, though Cockapoos and other “hypoallergenic” breeds may be less likely to induce allergies due to their moderate to low shedding coats.
For Cockapoos, it's best to avoid feeding them fatty meats, as well as foods with a high sugar content. Also, never feed them grapes, raisins, chocolate, avocado, oats, corn, citric acid, onions, garlic, nuts, tomatoes, potatoes, yeast dough, and macadamia nuts. These items can cause serious health problems if ingested. Furthermore, the Cockapoo's diet should consist mostly of premium dry dog food as the primary source of nutrition.
Cockapoos are generally considered a fairly low-maintenance breed of dog, however, they do still have some special requirements that need to be met in order for them to stay happy and healthy. Firstly, as Cockapoos have a tendency to be prone to anxiety, providing them with plenty of physical and mental stimulation on a daily basis is a must. This might mean regular walks, playtime and even some basic training to keep them mentally stimulated. Additionally, it is important to ensure that they get regular grooming and haircuts to ensure that their fur remains tangle-free and healthy looking.
Cockapoo puppies can range in size from tiny to large and can weigh anywhere from 12 to 24 pounds when fully grown, depending on the size of their parents. However, the best way to accurately gauge a puppy's adult size is to measure the size of the puppy's parents. With that said, Cockapoos are typically between 9-14 inches tall and the size can vary between the different generations of Cockapoo shown by the parent.
Cockapoos often have moderately high energy levels and require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. A minimum of one hour of quality exercise per day is recommended, including a mix of both physical and mental activities. This could include activities like taking your pup for regular walks and runs, playing fetch, teaching them new tricks, or engaging in agility or obedience training. With their intelligence level, Cockapoos have the potential to become great companions for jogging, cycling, and hiking. To keep them mentally fit and challenged, offer plenty of stimulating toys to play with.
Cockapoos are highly intelligent, and often form strong bonds with children. Furthermore, they are known to have a fondness for people in general, and their natural playfulness and gentle temperaments make them perfect companions for children. Cockapoos tend to be highly trainable and respond well to positive reinforcement, leading some breeders to suggest them for working with and assisting children with special needs. Although their natural friendliness and love for people can lead to them becoming overly attached or potentially overwhelming your child, with proper guidance and consistency, Cockapoos can make wonderful lifelong family pets.
The amount of time you need to train a Cockapoo varies depending on the complexity of the commands and the level of difficulty of the behavior you're trying to teach. Generally, 15-30 minutes of intentional, focused training each day should be enough to ensure that your pup is making progress. However, that's not the only time they should be learning. You should also use everyday 'teachable moments' to reinforce commands and behaviors. This could include a game of fetch in the park or a few moments of practice when you give them a treat after performing a trick.
