Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are incredibly unique amongst the many types of breeds of dogs. One of the most interesting things about Cockapoos is that they are a relatively new breed, having been around only since the 1960s. By crossing a cocker spaniel and a poodle, breeders created a playful, loyal, and intelligent breed. Cockapoos also come in a vast range of colors and sizes, ranging from nearly toy-sized to medium-sized and even having multi-colored coats.
It is commonly believed that Cockapoos are hypoallergenic, however this is not always the case. Cockapoos are classified as a hybrid breed, meaning there is not one definitive answer to the question. Depending on the Cockapoo's parent breeds, there can be varying levels of hypoallergenic qualities. If the Cockapoo has a Poodle parent, they often do possess hypoallergenic qualities due to the Poodle's curly coat.
Your Cockapoo should be fed a high quality diet consisting of a specially formulated commercial kibble for small breeds. Be sure to look up specific recommendations from your vet or a pet nutritionist regarding a good brand of premium pet food that meets your pup's needs. Additionally, mix in fresh, wholesome ingredients like cooked eggs and vegetables, as well as healthy snacks like fruit, while keeping treats to a minimum. However, it's best to be consistent with the type and amount of food you provide and monitor your Cockapoo's weight for any sudden changes.
Preparing your home for a new Cockapoo will help ensure that you and your pup have a happy living arrangement. First, make sure that all household cleaners, toxins, and other items that could be potentially harmful to your pup are out of reach. Next, identify a spot in the house where your Cockapoo can have their bed, food, water and toys. It’s also important to designate a particular area for elimination until house training is complete. Lastly, create a predictable routine that will give your pup a sense of security and consistency.
Cockapoos are a small to medium size breed, with an average adult size between 10 and 24 pounds. Depending on the size of the parents, Cockapoos may be bigger or smaller. Adult males tend to reach the larger end of the weight range and females the smaller. Generally, Standard Cockapoos will reach a size of 18 to 24 pounds while Toy Cockapoos will only reach 10 to 14 pounds; however, there are always exceptions to these generalizations.
To keep your Cockapoo healthy and active, a daily walking routine is essential. Depending on your pooch's energy level, they should typically spend at least 20-30 minutes per day walking. However, it is best to break that time up into several walks throughout the day if possible. After all, an active pup is a happy pup! That said, an exercise routine of 1-2 longer walks of at least 45 minutes per day can provide your pup with more stimulating activities that may help them to stay entertained when home alone.
Cockapoos can be great companions for kids given the right training and socialization. Generally speaking, Cockapoos are an intelligent, loving breed that many families choose due to their outgoing personalities and less-shedding coats. When socialized and trained properly, the Cockapoo loves every member of the family, regardless of age. With proper training, they build strong bonds with children and are very patient and tolerant when it comes to playing rough and being handled. Cockapoos are also known for their low energy which can be comforting in a noisy home with children that require a calming presence.
Training a Cockapoo can be straightforward or complicated, depending on the pup's individual personality. Generally, however, Cockapoos are intelligent and eager to please, which makes their training generally easier than that of some other breeds. Cockapoos often learn quickly, and positive reinforcement is usually the simplest and most acknowledged training method. A consistent approach is also important when it comes to Cockapo training since they won't always respond to mixed signals. Commands should also be used with consistency, otherwise your Cockapoo may become confused and become less motivated to learn.
