Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are an incredibly unique and interesting breed due to their cross between two of the most beloved dog breeds the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Their unique personalities combine the charming energy of the Cocker and the intelligence of the Poodle. This combination of traits offers interesting challenges in terms of training, since it is unlikely that a Cockapoo will respond the same way to both methods. However, it also makes them interesting and entertaining to observe. Cockapoos typically have personality traits that range from expansive and outgoing to timid and shy.
Cockapoos are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. While their exact characteristics can vary from dog to dog, they are often referred to as hypoallergenic or “low-shedding”. This is because Poodles, which make up one of the two breeds in a Cockapoo, are known for their low-shedding characteristics. Generally speaking, most Cockapoos are lowto non-shedding.
Cockapoos generally have a hearty and adaptable appetite, but their diet should be tailored toward their size, activity level, and age. In general, they should have an easily digestible, high-quality diet that is balanced with healthy fats, proteins, fibers, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Cockapoos may have a tendency to be overfed, so portion control is key for these diets. Supplementing their diet with fresh vegetables and fruits is also encouraged for a well-balanced diet.
Preparing your home for a new Cockapoo is fairly straightforward. To get started, create a comfortable puppy den where your pup can relax and sleep. Make sure to equip your den with safe, chewable toys and treats, and replace any dangerous items such as strings and yarn. Next, purchase a puppy bed, harness, collar and leash, as well as food and water dishes, and dog food that your pup will enjoy eating. To complete the setup for your new Cockapoo, provide potty pads or a litter box, as well as a few puppy-friendly chew toys.
Cockapoos are not typically considered big dogs. Generally, they weigh between 12 and 25 pounds when fully grown and range from 12 to 15 inches in height. Unlike large breeds of dogs, Cockapoos remain small however, size is not the only factor which classifies a dog as 'big'. Cockapoos are considered small when compared to many other breeds of dogs, such as golden retrievers and labrador retrievers, however, they possess many of the same characteristics seen in larger dog breeds.
The amount of time a Cockapoo should spend walking each day will depend on its age, size, and activity level. Generally, a younger Cockapoo should be walked around 30 minutes to one hour per day, while an adult can handle 30 to 45 minutes. You may also want to mix up your daily routine by giving your pooch variations of both indoor and outdoor activity levels. An experienced canine caretaker will be able to help you determine the best amount of time to walk your Cockapoo each day.
Cockapoos are generally very good with other pets, as they tend to get along well with most animals due to their friendly and outgoing personalities. They bring joy and happiness to households with other pets, and as they are highly trainable, they can quickly learn to accept and interact with other animals. With the right socialization and training, Cockapoos can learn to recognize and respond appropriately to other dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other animals. They can quickly become comfortable with other animals, leading to very harmonious homes.
Cockapoos are quite intelligent dogs, some owners even remarking they match the smarts of a toddler. Being a hybridized breed, they tend to have a pleasant temperament and learn quickly. Cockapoos that are regularly trained and socialized since puppyhood will have an even better result, as puppies learn best within their early months. Intelligence in a Cockapoo can vary from one specific pup to another, but generally their intelligence helps them learn new behavior commands in a relatively short amount of time. They can learn both simple and complex commands and are quick to absorb even subtle differences in commands.
