Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are an increasingly popular hybrid breed, derived from crossing Cocker Spaniels and Poodles. The most interesting thing about Cockapoos is their temperament. They're known to be friendly, gentle, energetic, and intelligent, making them an ideal family pet. They are especially well-suited for families with children since they are playful, patient, and non-aggressive. Cockapoos can adapt to many kinds of living arrangements and tend to be just as happy playing in the backyard or running around the house as they are going for long walks.
Cockapoos are generally considered to be non-shedding, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they won't shed any fur at all. Cockapoos are a hybrid breed that is created from a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, so the amount of shedding they do can depend heavily on which parent breed they more closely resemble. Generally, cockapoos that have more poodle in their genes are less likely to shed than those with a higher percentage of Cocker Spaniel in their genes.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos do not require any special dietary considerations beyond what a regular, healthy canine diet may provide. Like all dogs, Cockapoos will benefit from high quality dog food with proteins, carbohydrates, fats, essential vitamins and minerals for optimal health. However, keep in mind that each individual canine may require different dietary needs depending upon their age, size, energy level, activity level and any health issues. It's best to discuss any special dietary needs and concerns with a certified veterinarian.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cockapoo takes dedication and love. Start by learning as much as you can about the breed so that you're aware of the specific characteristics and needs of your breed. Make sure your home is adequately prepared before bringing your pup home, setting up a space for eating, sleeping, and playing. Invest in necessary training and socialization, as these will help your pup to adjust to their forever home. Exercise is important for Cockapoos and providing adequate mental stimulation will help keep your pup's brain active.
Cockapoos typically weigh between 12-25 pounds and stand around 10-15 inches tall when fully grown. Size largely depends on the size of their parent breeds the Toy or Miniature Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel. The result is a generally small-to-medium sized dog with variations in size range depending on the characteristics of the parent breeds. Both Toy and Mini Cockapoos are generally recognized as being under 18 pounds when fully grown, while Standard Cockapoos can weigh up to 25 pounds.
Cockapoos generally have a very strong affinity for water and enjoy swimming. This is especially true for those who have been bred from water-sporting breeds, such as the Cocker Spaniel, as the water-loving genetics will be more prevalent. Cockapoos of all sizes and ages will usually be quite enthusiastic when in the water, and know instinctively how to paddle in order to propel themselves forward. Swimming is excellent exercise for them, and a great way to keep your Cockapoo healthy and strong.
Cockapoos are generally excellent choices for families with young children. They have sweet personalities, often make great companions for children, and their low-shedding coat and moderate energy level make them a great fit for all types of families. Cockapoos are exceptionally intelligent and highly trainable, which can make them easier to manage around children. Furthermore, their strong capacity for affection and loyal nature make them wanting to spend time with their owners, especially the young ones. As long as they are properly socialized, Cockapoos are usually affectionate and forgiving of mischief.
Training a Cockapoo can potentially be easy if your pup is already well-socialized and open to learning. Cockapoos, since they are a Poodle-Cocker Spaniel cross, are usually quite intelligent. With the consistency of reward-based training, it can make for a happy pup who is easy to train and already knows the basics. It is important to note that Cockapoos tend to have a lot of energy, so incorporating training games such as scent exercises and obstacle courses into the routine can make the training much more entertaining.
