Cockapoos are a popular designer breed that is a combination of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. They are classified as a cross breed, or ‘mixed’ breed, as they don't have a devoted bloodline of parents that breed with each other to create a particular look and temperament. Although Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, they all share the same basic traits which combine the best of each breed. Cockapoos need weekly grooming, as their two parent breeds both have long coat textures that can often times become tangled and matted.
Cockapoos are considered a low-shedding breed, but they do require regular grooming and are not completely non-shedding. Cockapoos have coats that are a combination of their Poodle and Cocker Spaniel parents, so they require regular brushing to keep their coat and skin healthy and to remove loose hair. Regular brushing also helps reduce shedding, but some light shedding is normal and expected. On average, Cockapoos tend to shed less than their Poodle or Cocker Spaniel parents, making them an ideal breed for those who suffer from allergies or require low maintenance.
Cockapoos are generally very healthy dogs, but proper nutrition is essential for them to maintain that good health. You should not feed your Cockapoo anything that is high in fat or sodium, as these can easily cause health issues. Avoid giving them table scraps and human food which often contains too much of either of these. Chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and macadamias are all toxic for dogs and should be avoided as well.
