Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Its small size and sweet personality make it an ideal companion for both single people and families alike. Cockapoos usually have wavy to curly coats that range from almost white to shades of brown and black. They shed very little if at all, making them a great choice for anyone with allergies. Cockapoos are typically affectionate, friendly dogs, with some even being a little more high-spirited. They tend to bond with multiple people in a family, making them great family pets.
Cockapoos are hybrids of the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, so they do not have a breed-specific answer to the non-shedding question. Some Cockapoos are low-shedding and some shed more, depending on the type of coat they have. Low-shedding Cockapoos typically possess the coat of a Poodle and high-shedding Cockapoos often possess the coat of a Cocker Spaniel.
Cockapoos should not be fed table food, as it is not nutritionally balanced for their bodies and could cause digestive and health issues over time. Rather, it is better to feed them a balanced, high-quality dog food specifically designed for small breeds and their specific nutrition needs. Additionally, foods such as chocolate and other “human” sweets which contain high amounts of sugar and fat should be avoided as they are not healthy for Cockapoos. Things such as rawhide and bones should also be avoided as they may cause a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockage.
Prior to bringing your new Cockapoo home, it is important to prepare your home for their arrival. Create a cozy space with plenty of bedding options, a toy box with things to keep your pup occupied, and a designated area with crate, chew toys, and food and water bowls. If you have hardwood floors, consider covering them with area rugs to provide insulation against cold temperatures. Set up puppy-proof gates in doorways and stairways to prevent your Cockapoo from straying.
Cockapoos are considered small dogs because they typically measure between 10 and 15 inches tall, with some varieties growing only up to 10 inches and weighing no more than 20 pounds. They are often considered a lapdog due to their small stature and are fairly quiet with few barking tendencies. Additionally, Cockapoos have lowto non-shedding coats that vary in texture from wiry to soft and curly. Since Cockapoos do not require a lot of exercise, they are well-suited to smaller living spaces and are great dogs for apartment dwellers.
Absolutely! Cockapoos absolutely love to swim! Much like their original ancestors, the Water Spaniel and the Poodle, Cockapoos have a genuine affinity for the water. With some early training, Cockapoos adapt quickly to the bliss of swimming, making it one of their favorite activities. From wading in rivers to paddling in pools, Cockapoos can usually be found with a smile on their faces and a dog-paddle in their stride.
Absolutely, Cockapoos are an excellent breed for first-time owners! They are known for being extremely friendly and affectionate. They also get along very well with other pets and children. Cockapoos are relatively low-maintenance and low-shedding, so you won't have to worry about constant care or veterinary visits. They are also fairly intelligent and can be trained easily. All in all, Cockapoos have the perfect combination of a great personality and easy care, making them an ideal choice for a new pet owner.
Training a Cockapoo can be fairly easy if you are consistently firm and patient. Begin the training process as soon as possible, while they are still puppies, so behaviors become part of their disposition as they mature. Establish a routine, and stick to it to help teach them structure. Use positive reinforcement, such as treats and verbal praise, to help shape desired behaviors. Work with them in short intervals over a period of time to establish the behaviors they should have and understand clear boundaries and expectations.
