Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Cockapoos is their lifespan. These affectionate, friendly companions often live up to 18 years or even longer, making them one of the longest-living breeds in the world! They also have the sweet temperaments of both their parents (Cocker Spaniel and Poodle) combined, which makes them incredibly intelligent and easy to train.
Cockapoos are generally considered a low-shedding breed. While they may not be considered entirely non-shedding, they are considered to be low to medium shedders. The cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle has two main advantages: they usually require less grooming than purebred dogs and the shedding rate usually is lower than purebred dogs. Cockapoos have the typical shelter coat composed of either wavy or curly, soft hair. This type of coat provides very limited shedding.
Cockapoos have moderate dietary needs compared to other breeds, and are less prone to food allergies. They should have a balanced diet of well-portioned protein, carbohydrates, and fats. They also need essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals to keep them healthy. Fruits and Vegetables should be incorporated into their diet, but should not be given in excess as it can upset their belly. The frequency of feeding and portion size will depend on their age, size, and overall activity levels consulting with a veterinarian for proper guidance would be beneficial.
First and foremost, it is important to puppy proof your home. Be sure to secure cords, destroy trash and keep any hazardous items out of reach from your pup. If you have any small items that can be chewed on, such as shoes or small toys, remove them and store them away. Be sure to create defined play and sleeping areas which are safe and comfortable for your pet. Begin potty training as soon as possible and provide your pup with plenty of chew toys.
Cockapoos are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle and can range in size from small to large. Generally speaking, female Cockapoos weigh between 13 and 18 pounds, while males typically weigh between 15 and 20 pounds. The smallest Cockapoos tend to have a leaner build, while larger Cockapoos are more compactly built. In general, Cockapoos reach their full size between 12 and 16 months and stop growing somewhere between 15 and 20 inches in height.
Cockapoos are a very active breed that love to play. They require regular exercise to stay healthy. Depending on the age of the Cockapoo, time and distance spent exercising will vary, but experts recommend providing at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. This could consist of a daily walk, brisk jog, fetch session, or dog park visit. For young puppies, the exercise time should be limited to short play sessions because they tire out quickly. Additionally, it is important to ensure the Cockapoo is not overexerted.
Cockapoos tend to be friendly and sociable by nature, so they typically get along well with other pets. However, as with any pet, it is important to provide proper socialization and plenty of positive interactions to ensure there is a harmonious relationship. Proper introductions and training should be done gradually, starting with brief, controlled interactions and gradually building the amount of contact time and the intensity of play. With patience and understanding, Cockapoos can learn to share their home with other pets and form strong, life-long relationships.
Training your Cockapoo is quite simple and can be done through basic commands and positive reinforcement. First, have your Cockapoo sit and stay in one location. Give it praise and a reward when it follows these commands. Secondly, start to introduce other basic commands like come, no, and stop. Using patience and repetition, reward your Cockapoo with treats or verbal praise once it follows a command. Finally, start creating a routine pattern of behaviors and reward your pup when it follows through.
