Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a hybrid cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. It is a popular designer breed of dog, which is incredibly smart and lovable. They are characterized as being sociable, loyal, and affectionate companions who will provide years of entertainment and unconditional love. Cockapoos usually have a wavy or curly double coat which requires frequent grooming, although they are considered a low-shedding breed and are ideal for people with allergies.
The Cockapoo coat is typically soft and wavy, similar to that of a Poodle. However, Cockapoo coats can vary from long and luxurious to short, soft coats that barely require grooming. Coat color can range from buff, silver, red, black, tan, white to combinations like phantom, sable, and brindle. Cockapoos also have the advantage of having very low shedding coats, making them a great choice for those with allergies.
Cockapoos should not be fed foods that are high in fat, such as butter and bacon. Also, avoid feeding Cockapoos rawhide, which can cause choking or gastrointestinal obstructions. Furthermore, Cockapoos should not be fed table scraps containing garlic, onions, or other alliums, as these can damage a Cockapoo's red blood cells and cause anemia. Additionally, Cockapoos should be kept away from grapes and raisins, as they can cause acute renal failure.
To get your home ready for your new Cockapoo, you should start by ensuring that your home is safe and accessible as possible. This means doing things like puppy-proofing by putting away small items such as strings, paper clips, and other choking hazards. You should also establish boundaries for your pup by blocking off areas like stairs or furniture that may be off-limits. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies, such as a crate, feeding and water bowls, collar, leash, and toys. You should also consider setting up a comfortable spot for your pup to sleep and rest.
A Cockapoo puppy can reach a wide range of sizes when they are fully grown, ranging anywhere from 5 to 25 pounds. The size of your puppy is largely dependent on their parents' size. Although some Cockapoos tend to remain on the smaller side, it's impossible to provide an exact size without seeing the parents or puppies. Generally, an F1 parent will produce slightly larger puppies, and an F2 will produce smaller puppies.
Cockapoos are known to be avid water lovers and often enjoy activities like swimming. Thanks to their Poodle heritage, they have a thick, water-resistant coat that makes it easy for them to take a dip. Plus, they have webbed toes, which gives them great swimming ability. An energetic pup, swimming is a great way to exercise for them. As such, there is no shortage of Cockapoos that love jumping into the pool and spending many hours splashing in the water. They’re also very fond of going for boat rides and playing fetch in the pool.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos are quite sociable and often get along easily with other pets they are introduced to. This breed is known for its gentle and outgoing personality, so they are highly compatible with other pet companions like cats and other small animals. While Cockapoos may initially be shy around new friends, they will eventually become comfortable in the presence of other animals with plenty of patience and time spent introducing them. With a good dose of love, affection and positive reinforcement, Cockapoos have the potential to get along well with other pets.
Training your Cockapoo requires time, patience, and consistent practices. To begin, reward your Cockapoo each time they perform the desired behavior or action. This will reinforce the positive behavior as well as help your pup understand what is expected of them. Additionally, use a variety of treats to keep them motivated and engaged throughout the training process. Teaching commands such as heel, sit, stay, and ‘leave it’ are good places to start. Start with small commands and slowly increase the difficulty as your pup gets better.
