Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid breed of dog developed by crossing a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This mix results in a loving, active and intelligent companion that makes a great pet. They're also known to have an affectionate, gentle and loyal temperament. Fun facts about Cockapoos include that they are hypoallergenic because they shed very little; they learn quickly and are very eager to please; and they can be anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds and 8 to 15 inches in height.
Cockapoos are considered a low-shedding breed due to their genetic make-up. Many Cockapoos are non-shedding, although this is not always guaranteed. Grooming and regular brushing will help reduce the amount of shedding and help keep the coat in good condition. Cockapoos are also known for their allergy-friendly coats, making them a great option for those with pet allergies.
Cockapoos should not be fed anything too high in fat, as this can be detrimental to their health. They should also not be given human food, as it often contains too much salt and/or sugar which can upset their delicate tummies. Grapes, cherries, onions, garlic, alcohol, chocolate, and avocado should all be avoided as they can be toxic for your Cockapoo. Uncooked meat, fish, and eggs can contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning and should not be fed to Cockapoos either.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cockapoo takes dedication and plenty of patience. Start by doing plenty of research into the breed and learning the basics of caring for a puppy. Buy supplies like a collar and leash, food and water bowls, and puppy food specifically made for Cockapoos. Establish a regular routine for meals, walks, playtime and trips outside for potty breaks. Train your puppy to recognize basic commands and rewards like treats for good behavior. Provide your puppy with lots of love and affection so they feel safe and secure in their new home.
Cockapoos are generally considered small dogs due to their size. On average, they can measure between 10 15 inches in height and can weigh anywhere from 10 to 25 pounds. While male Cockapoos are often larger than females, they still remain relatively small compared to other breeds. Depending on an individual’s size preference, Cockapoos could be considered a big dog to some and a small dog to others. Overall, they are generally considered to be a toy breed.
The amount of daily walking recommended for a Cockapoo can vary depending on its age, size, and health. Generally, an adult Cockapoo should get at least 30 minutes to an hour of exercise daily in the form of walks, playtime, or training sessions. Puppies should receive shorter, more frequent walks of 5-10 minutes each. However, if it’s particularly hot outside or the day is otherwise unsuitable for strenuous exercise, shorter walks or just playing in the yard should suffice.
Absolutely! Cockapoos make great family dogs as they are intelligent, affectionate, and adaptable. Not only do they possess a gentle demeanor and eagerness to please their owners, but also exhibit a moderate amount of energy that keeps them active and playful without becoming too hyperactive or rambunctious. Their un-shedding coat makes them suitable for homes with people who suffer from allergies, and they are tolerant of children and the elderly. They also easily bond with their family, have relatively low grooming needs, and enjoy regular exercise.
How much exercise a Cockapoo needs depends on its age, size, and energy level. Generally speaking, they need about 60 minutes of physical activity per day, such as walking, running, and playing fetch. This should be supplemented with mental stimulation, otherwise known as 'brain games' that test and challenge the dog's agility, problem-solving, and sensory abilities. This could include puzzle-style toys, learning basic commands like 'sit' and 'stay', or Hide and Seek.
