Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid, or designer, breed of canine, created by crossing a poodle with a Cocker Spaniel. As such, they are not considered a true breed, as they cannot be recognised by American Kennel Club (AKC). However, Cockapoos are very popular as companion dogs due to their friendly, outgoing temperaments, small size, and hypoallergenic coats. Because of their size and gentle personality, Cockapoos tend to make excellent family pets and are great for apartments or city living.
Cockapoos are hybrids between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, which are two breeds known for their minimal shedding. While it's impossible to guarantee that a Cockapoo will not shed at all, they are known to produce much less fur than other breeds, resulting in less shedding and dander. Cockapoos typically require regular brushing to maintain their coat, which will help keep shed fur under control. Their coat is also considered hypoallergenic, meaning that it does not contain as many allergens as other breeds.
Cockapoos should not be fed chocolate, macadamia nuts, alcohol, avocado, caffeine, onion, garlic, raw meat, raw eggs, raw fish, citrus fruits, or any other people food. These items can be toxic to a Cockapoo and, if ingested, they can lead to serious problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, low blood sugar, or worse. Additionally, it is important to avoid any food that contains a lot of salt, sugar, or fat content. Such food can cause obesity, diabetes and other health problems.
Before bringing a new Cockapoo home, it's important to make sure your house is properly prepared. To start, create a designated area in your home that will be your pup's play area for both daily activities and sleep time. Set up a comfortable bed with easily washable bedding and a few toys for entertainment. Additionally, invest in pens or baby gates you can use to restrict access to certain areas of your home and help your pup stay safe.
Cockapoos typically range in size from tiny Toy varieties that can weigh as little as 6 pounds, up to the larger Maxi Cockapoos that can weigh as much as 25 pounds when fully grown. But, most Cockapoos remain between 9 to 18 pounds in adulthood. Common sizes for a Cockapoo are: Toy (9 pounds and under), Mini (10-14 pounds), Small Standard (15-18 pounds), Medium (19-22 pounds), and Large Standard (23-25 pounds).
Generally, Cockapoos tend to enjoy swimming! These intelligent and active American Cockapoos love to have fun, and they usually pick up on things quickly. Since the Cockapoo is a cross breed, many love activities that include swimming, such as in a pool or pond, and their well-built bodies allow them to easily handle different kinds of water. On top of that, the regular exercise and mental stimulation of a daily swim helps to keep your Cockapoo fit and content. However, always take precaution when swimming with your Cockapoo.
Cockapoos can be very friendly and affectionate with other pets when socialized properly. It is important to remember that, like most dogs, Cockapoos may potentially see cats, smaller animals, and birds as prey, so it is important to introduce them carefully and encourage positive behavior around other animals. With proper guidance and training, Cockapoos can learn to coexist peacefully with other pets and can even become great companions. As social animals, Cockapoos enjoy the interaction with other animals when they are introduced to them in a careful and intelligent manner.
Training Cockapoos should be done on a daily basis, however, the exact amount of minutes needed will vary depending on your individual pet's age, level of training, and temperament. Generally speaking, you should aim to train your Cockapoo for at least 10-15 minutes each day. This will help them develop a strong bond with you and even learn new skills. For puppies, training should be shorter (5 minutes max) but still frequent to build positive reinforcement. As time goes on, you can gradually increase the session's length when your pup is comfortable with the activities.
