Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a designer breed of dog, made by crossing a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Both the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle were bred to be companion animals, resulting in a Cockapoo nicknamed the "Eternal Puppy" because of their nonstop energy. They have an average life expectancy of 12-15 years, which is longer than both of its parent breeds. Cockapoos are popular because they usually do not cause issues with allergies, often do not require grooming, and can fit in an apartment.
Although Cockapoos are generally low-shedding and hypoallergenic which can reduce the likelihood of allergies, it is not guaranteed. It is important to note that even hypoallergenic dogs produce proteins called allergens which can still be enough to trigger allergies. It would be best to consult your doctor, who can tell you if you are likely to have any allergic reaction to Cockapoos. Additionally, it is always recommended to do a trial run with a friend's Cockapoo before committing to one of your own.
Cockapoos, like other dogs, need a well-balanced diet to keep them healthy. In general, Cockapoos should consume a combination of dry food, wet food, and healthy treats. When it comes to deciding on an appropriate brand of kibble, look for a quality dog food that lists a meat source as the first ingredient and does not contain artificial preservatives or flavors. Be sure to regularly read the ingredients list to make sure the food in the bag stays consistent with your dog's needs.
Before getting a Cockapoo, it is essential to get the necessary supplies. This includes food and water bowls that are the right size for your puppy, a good quality and safe dog bed, an appropriate sized crate, durable collars and leashes, chewable toys, treats, brushes and grooming products, and dishes for food and water. It's important to also get dog waste bags, a vet's phone number, a pet first aid kit, training books or videos, and items for making the home safe for the new pet, such as gates and/or child locks.
Cockapoos can range in size, as they are a hybrid cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Depending on which parent breed the Cockapoo takes after, they generally range in size from about 10 to 18 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 12 and 20 pounds. Though they may be small, Cockapoos have big personalities and they are known to be smart and affectionate. This is why they make great companions! They are also relatively low-shedding, as both parent breeds are known for their low-shedding coats.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are typically loving water and they usually do not mind getting wet. They may even take the initiative and wade into shallow water without being coaxed. Since Cockapoos are a hybrid of the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, they are likely to inherit both breeds' affinity for the water. It is generally accepted that the Poodle breed was developed as a water retriever and the Cocker Spaniel was bred as a hunting and gun dog that worked near rivers and wetlands.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are an excellent option for first-time owners because of their friendly, loving temperaments. They are intelligent, loyal, and adaptable, making them easy to train. They are happy with gentle play and love to be around people. Cockapoos have low-to-non-shedding coats, so they are a good choice for people with allergies. They do require regular grooming but are generally low-maintenance compared to other breeds. Cockapoos can fit easily into any lifestyle and have the potential to become the best of friends for their owners.
Training your Cockapoo should follow the general guidelines of training any dog, but there are additional considerations related to the breed. Start by paying attention to your Cockapoo's particular personality; there are many behavioral quirks inherent with this breed, ranging from mischievousness to high energy. You'll need to remain patient with your pup and take things slow. Begin by establishing commands for basic obedience. Make sure to reward your dog with treats or positive reinforcement for following directions this will help reinforce the lesson.
