Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid, or designer, dog breed created by crossing a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle. Generally friendly and outgoing, they are known for their low-shedding, hypoallergenic coats and their intelligence. With these attributes, it's no wonder Cockapoos are a popular choice as a companion dog. Cockapoos fit into the non-sporting breed class and were created to have a joyful and tolerant temperament. They have larger personalities than their small size suggests, and they love to be the center of attention.
Cockapoos have a surprisingly varied coat that can come in a range of colors and textures. The coat is often usually a wavy combination of the parent breeds' coat characteristics consisting of either wiry and coarse textures, similar to the poodle parent, or a soft, wavy blend of fur similar to the cocker spaniel's coat. Generally, Cockapoos have a single layer coat that doesn't shed much, making them good indoor pets.
Cockapoos have sensitive stomachs so it is important to feed them a balanced diet with only the best quality food. Avoid feeding Cockapoos table scraps, fatty foods, and human junk food as this can lead to dietary problems and can sometimes be toxic for them. Certain human foods, such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, and garlic can be extremely toxic to them and should never be given. Cockapoos also cannot chew and digest rawhide treats and can choke on small bones, so these should be avoided as well.
Preparing your home for a new Cockapoo is an important step in welcoming them to their new family. It's best to start by puppy-proofing your living space, as puppies will tend to chew and explore. Start by walking around the room and scanning every corner to remove inappropriate items, secure electric cords, and remove small objects that could pose a choking hazard. Make sure to block off any access they might have to staircases, balconies, or other potential safety risks. Provide plenty of safe and comfortable sleeping areas for them, and establish early bedtime and playtime routines.
Cockapoos generally come in three sizes, Toy, Miniature, and Standard. Toy Cockapoos are typically around 10 inches tall and weigh less than 12 pounds. Miniature Cockapoos average around 15 inches tall and typically weigh anywhere from 13 to 18 pounds. Finally, Standard Cockapoos are between 18 and 20 inches tall, and can weigh as much as 30 pounds. Therefore, there are different sizes of Cockapoos to suit your individual needs.
Yes, Cockapoos generally love to swim! Cockapoos, also known as a spoodle, are a hybrid cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Cockapoos are considered a non-shedding, low-dander breed of dog, making them a desirable choice for those with allergies or asthma. Additionally, the hypoallergenic coats of Cockapoos are perfect for swimming, as this type of coat helps to prevent them from becoming too heavy with water, aiding in their ability to stay afloat much easier.
Yes, Cockapoos can be great for first-time owners! They are known for being affectionate and loyal, with relatively low maintenance grooming. Cockapoos are a crossbreed so they usually have a calm and even temperament, making them an ideal choice for those new to owning a pet. With their smaller toy size, they can be suitable for urban and small living spaces. As long as the Cockapoo gets enough exercise and mental stimulation, they have the potential to make great additions to your family.
Training a Cockapoo is quite straightforward but can take time and patience. First, establish a clear set of rules and guidelines that you plan to use when training your pup, so they know what is and is not allowed. Make sure you remain consistent with your commands, and reward good behavior with praise or treats. Teach your pup the basics like sit, stay, come, and down through positive reinforcement, such as verbal praises and rewards. You should also potty-train them early as they are very sensitive to changes in their environment and routines.
