Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a type of designer breed dog that is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This hybrid breed was developed in the 1950's in the United States with the intention of developing a small companion breed. Cockapoos are known for their intelligence, loyal and lovable personality, and activity level. With generally curly coats ranging from wavy to tightly curled, these low-shedding dogs come in a variety of colors, and often lighter shades such as white, cream, apricot, and red.
Cockapoos are considered to be hypoallergenic due to the Poodle in their breed history. The Poodle trait of non-shedding and the Cockapoo's combination of a low-shedding coat reduces the amount of dander in the air, which can reduce allergic reactions. They do still require regular grooming, including proper brushing and even haircuts to keep their hair and undercoat clean and manageable, as well as occasional baths as needed.
Cockapoos require a balanced diet of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals, and vitamins. High-quality, commercial dog food formulated specifically for small breeds is recommended. Many Cockapoos are also lactose-intolerant, so dairy products should be avoided. Additionally, they can benefit from occasional treats such as raw carrots, green beans, and apples. It's important to avoid feeding your Cockapoo human foods that are high in fat, salt, and sugar. Rawhide chews are also best avoided, as they may cause digestive or choking issues.
Becoming a great puppy parent for a Cockapoo requires dedication, knowledge, and most importantly, patience. It also helps to have realistic expectations of both you and your pup. First, you should do some research into the breed and become familiar with what their needs are. This will help guide you in your training and provide you with the tools to be proactive in problem areas. Set up a daily routine for your pup to follow that includes regular meals, potty breaks, and exercise.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, depending on the breed of their parents. Since Cockapoos are a mix between a Poodle and an Cocker Spaniel, the size of a Cockapoo can range from tiny to very large. Generally, toy Cockapoos are 6 to 12 pounds and up to 10 inches tall; miniature Cockapoos are 12 to 17 pounds and 10 to 14 inches tall; and standard Cockapoos are over 17 pounds and over 14 inches at the shoulder. Despite their size, all Cockapoos are equally affectionate.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos do enjoy swimming -depending on the particular pup. Many Cockapoos will even paddle around in a pool or head for the lake with their family. It's best to introduce your Cockapoo to swimming gradually and ensure they are wearing a life vest for safety. Exercise can be helpful to keep Cockapoos healthy and active, and participating in aquatic activities can be a great way to stay busy and have fun with your Cockapoo. Once they get comfortable swimming, you'll find your Cockapoo loves the water and loves playing with you in it.
Cockapoos are an excellent choice for families seeking a loyal and social companion. Their small size makes them great for homes of all sizes, and they are adaptable to many lifestyles and are easily trained. They are known to love children, making them a great family pet. Cockapoos are found to be highly intelligent, affectionate, and gentle to all members of the family. They are also low-shedding and hypoallergenic which is ideal for families looking for a pet without too much maintenance.
The amount of minutes per day needed to train a Cockapoo will vary depending on the age of the dog, as well as the level of behavior you are aiming to achieve. For puppies, shorter, more frequent sessions of around five minutes will be more beneficial than long sessions; this will help them to learn commands and cues in stages without being overwhelmed. Once the puppy is older, you can start to increase the length of your sessions; the older your Cockapoo, the more minutes per day you should try to train.
