Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid "designer" dog originally created by crossing a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Cockapoos are considered to be part of the Toy Group of dogs due to their overall small size, usually ranging from 4-20lbs. Generally their coat can range from wavy and moderate length to curly and long depending on the type of Poodle used for breeding. The Cockapoo breed is known for being sociable, loving, and with a gentle mischievous streak.
Cockapoos have become increasingly popular as hypoallergenic dogs due to their low-shedding traits. While Cockapoos are not considered a totally non-allergenic breed, there have been reports that they cause less allergic symptoms than many other popular breeds. This is due to their curly, poodle-like coats, which trap fewer allergens than straight-haired coats. However, it's important to note that Cockapoos, like any other breed, still shed some dander, which is what triggers allergies.
Cockapoos are most commonly fed dry or wet canine food, as this is the healthiest option for their digestive system. However, there are some human food items that should never be fed to them, such as grapes, raisins, chocolates, and onions, as these are all toxic to dogs. Similarly, Cockapoos should also never be given bones or anything that could be a choking hazard, as they can have trouble digesting larger pieces and can cause blockages.
Preparing for a new Cockapoo requires careful consideration and planning. Start by determining the basics of what they'll need for their new home, such as a suitable place to sleep, food and water dishes, toys, and a way to dispose of their waste. Research what type of food is best for them, and consider talking to a vet about any recommended vaccinations and ongoing health care procedures. Additionally, take time to properly train and socialize your Cockapoo with positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, to ensure they learn the proper behaviors and build a trusting bond with you.
Cockapoos are known for their moderate size, so your puppy's size will largely depend on the size of its parents. On average, a full-grown adult Cockapoo will be anywhere from 10 to 15 inches in height and 8 to 20 pounds in weight. The actual size of your Cockapoo will depend on a number of factors such as its parents’ size and its genetics. However, you can expect your puppy to reach its full adult size between 1 and 2 years of age.
It is definitely possible to take your Cockapoo running! However, to ensure your pup enjoys the experience and that it is safe for both of you, it is best to make sure you and your pup have done some preparation first. Depending on the age and fitness of your Cockapoo, you may need to gradually build up to longer distances and it is important to be aware of any environmental or health considerations that may effect your pup while running.
Generally, Cockapoos are great when it comes to getting along with other pets. This breed is usually friendly, affectionate, and easy to train which makes them a good choice for households with multiple pets. In addition, Cockapoos tend to be social animals, and generally enjoy playing with other pets or people. Of course, it's important to remember that it's best to introduce any new pets at a slow pace and with plenty of supervision. That being said, Cockapoos can often fit right into a home where there are already other pets.
Training your Cockapoo should begin with building a relationship and trust with your pup. Start by teaching basic obedience commands like 'sit', 'stay', 'come', and 'lie down'. Start each session with something rewarding to your pup like a tasty treat and some positive reinforcement whenever your Cockapoo succeeds. With repetition and consistency, these commands will become second nature for your pup. Be sure to take plenty of breaks during training and enjoy the time you spend with your pup. Your pup will love the attention and positive reinforcement.
