Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a designer breed, which is a hybrid combination of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They typically have beautiful coats and often come in varieties of black, white, tan, chocolate and more. As one of the oldest designer breeds, Cockapoos have a cheerful, energetic personality and are perfect for families who have active lifestyles. Additionally, their hypoallergenic coats make them the ideal pet for a family who has allergies. Furthermore, Cockapoos are incredibly intelligent and are easy to train.
The Cockapoo has a unique coat that is often seen in various different colors and lengths. Depending on the breeding of the dog, the coat of the Cockapoo can usually range from short, soft, straight hair to a wavy, dense, curly, thick coat. Generally, Cockapoos will require regular brushing and/or grooming to ensure their coat remains healthy. The fur should be kept clean and clear of dead hair and debris. Depending on the breed of the Cockapoo, its coat may require more maintenance than other breeds, but nothing too extensive.
Cockapoos are very active and inquisitive little dogs, and as such they need a good balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats in their diet. It is no different for Cockapoos than for any other breed. Although it is not strictly necessary, it is best to provide them with high quality store bought dry dog food as this will provide them with the optimal nutrition. Many commercial dog foods also include necessary vitamins and minerals that are essential for bone and joint growth.
As you prepare to welcome your Cockapoo into your home, you'll need to stock up on a few essential items. Be sure to purchase top-notch food for your pet, preferably a high-quality dry kibble formulated for puppies or adult dogs. You'll need a roomy crate that your Cockapoo can comfortably move around in, such as a plastic crate with a divider so you can adjust the size as they grow. Also, consider getting comfortable, safe bedding and a few toys that will help the pup feel at home and keep them occupied.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos are considered small dogs. These mixed breed dogs are a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. Typically, they range from 14 to 20 pounds, with a maximum standing height of around 15 inches. Cockapoos are easily identifiable for their round heads, big eyes, round noses, and fluffy coats. As small dogs they need regular exercise and attention, and they make great companions for families who have active lifestyles. Even more endearing is that Cockapoos are easy to train and enjoy spending time with their owners.
Cockapoos absolutely love water and swimming! They enjoy it so much, in fact, that the American Cockapoo Club even recommends swimming as a part of a Cockapoo's exercise routine. This is because Cockapoos are descended from the poodle, a breed of dog that's been bred to swim to assist with duck hunting. Not only does swimming help Cockapoos stay physically fit, but it's also great for mental health. The mixture of the physical exercise and the joy of being in the water that swimming provides is often a huge stress reliever for dogs of all breeds.
Cockapoos generally have a temperament that tends to be quite kid-friendly. They often form strong bonds with children and can be gentle companions and playmates. Although this breed may be quite active and can often be too full of energy for very young kids, older children can benefit greatly from having a Cockapoo in the family. They are social animals that love to be around people, including the little ones, and usually have plenty of patience for all their furry antics.
Training a Cockapoo is quite easy, and it can be incredibly rewarding for both you and your pup. To start, it's important to remain consistent with your training, as Cockapoos can pick up on even slight changes in approach. Be sure to give your pup lots of positive reinforcement, like verbal praise and treats, when they do something correctly. Create a routine for your pup that you stick to each day. This helps them learn the basic commands like “sit”, “stay”, and “come” quickly.
