Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a unique hybrid of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. One fun fact is that Cockapoos can be easily trained thanks to their Cocker Spaniel parentage and intelligence from their Poodle parent. They are considered to be very loyal and affectionate family dogs. Cockapoos don't have the same coat as a purebred dog and, because of this, they will not shed as much as a purebred pup. They also tend to be a hypoallergenic breed.
Cockapoos are low-shedding breeds, and can be considered non-shedding depending on their parentage. Generally speaking, Cockapoos that are crossbred with a Poodle will produce fewer allergens, and will shed less than Cockapoos crossbred with a Cocker Spaniel. However, even the non-shedding variety of Cockapoos may still require occasional brushing and combing to remove excess fur.
Cockapoos should not be fed any type of human food that is high in sugar, fat, salt, or processed grains such as white bread, rice, pasta, and baked goods. Additionally, avocados, onions, grapes, raisins, alcohol, caffeine, and chocolate can all be toxic to Cockapoos in certain amounts. Even pet foods that are designed for Cockapoos should be fed in moderation. Feeding your Cockapoo these items, even in small quantities, can cause an upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, and worse.
Preparing for a new Cockapoo can be an exciting yet overwhelming process. To ensure your pup is set up for success it is important to invest in the basics like a comfortable crate, a selection of appropriate toys, a collar and leash, and puppy-specific food. Also, try to create a routine for feeding, walking, and potty trips that is consistent for training. Lastly, schedule an appointment with a vet for immunizations and health information as soon as possible. Just taking a few simple steps can help ensure that you and your furry companion build a strong, lasting bond.
When considering the size of your Cockapoo puppy, the best way to accurately estimate is by looking to both mating parent breeds. The size of a Cockapoos's parentage will heavily influence the size of the pup. On average, the Cockapoo typically ranges between 12 and 18 inches tall and can weigh anywhere between around 10 pounds for a smaller miniature Cockapoo, all the way up to 35 pounds for a larger Maxi Cockapoo. There is no 'set' size for these puppies, as size can significantly vary even within a litters siblings.
Generally speaking, it's recommended to walk a Cockapoo for at least 30 minutes per day. This could include taking a daily walk, going for a run, playing in the park, or doing another type of physical activity that gets your pup moving. Remember that your pup's exercise needs will vary depending on their age and size. Puppies tend to have shorter activity sessions, while adults may benefit from more intense workouts. Ultimately, the amount of exercise your Cockapoo requires will depend on their energy level and lifestyle, so be sure to tailor your pup's physical activity accordingly.
Cockapoos are known for being highly social and playful animals that typically get along well with children, particularly if the pup is raised from a young age in a household with kids. With the right diet, exercise, and socialization, Cockapoos develop into caring and even-tempered dogs, making them great family pets. With an energetic personality and easygoing nature, Cockapoos can be excellent companions and friends for children. By making sure to provide appropriate training and stimulation, children and Cockapoos can have a mutually beneficial relationship.
Training a Cockapoo is an important part of the dog's development and should be part of their daily routine. The amount of time needed per day can vary depending on the individual needs of the dog, their age, and their level of training. Generally, it is recommended that Cockapoos be trained for a minimum of 10 minutes every day, although this amount can be increased to 30 or even 50 minutes depending on the desired level of training.
