Cockapoos are a hybrid breed, also known as a designer breed. This breed is achieved through a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, resulting in an active, intelligent and sociable pup. They typically have a wavy to curly, low-shedding coat; and, although they vary in size, they are generally classed as a small to medium-sized dog. Cockapoos are a family-friendly breed that are normally easy to train, making them a popular choice for novice owners.
Cockapoos are known for their unique coat, which is a cross between a Poodle’s and a Cocker Spaniel’s. It is usually soft, dense, and wavy, and ranges in color from white to black, cream to sable, apricot to chocolate, and even merles! Generally, Cockapoos' coats are low-shedding, which makes them ideal pets for those who may have allergies.
As a Cockapoo owner, it's important to select a dog food that meets all of the nutritional requirements and dietary needs of your pup. Look for a high-quality, balanced diet that contains a high-quality protein source like chicken, beef, or fish, as well as complex carbohydrates like brown rice, potatoes, quinoa, and/or oatmeal. Animal-based fats such as fish oil support a healthy coat and skin and promote cognitive health.
Before bringing home a Cockapoo, it's essential to ensure that you have all the necessary items required to properly care for the pup. This includes a high-quality dry and wet food, appropriate food and water bowls, a cozy bed, a leash and harness, a fenced-in yard, plenty of chew toys, treats, and a comfortable crate. Grooming items are important too, such as clippers, a nail trimmer, a brush, shampoo, and conditioner.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny toy sizes to larger "standard" sizes. Toy Cockapoos are generally from 4-7 pounds, and under 10 inches tall. Miniature Cockapoos are usually 7-15 pounds and 11-14 inches tall, while a Standard Cockapoo typically ranges from 15-25 pounds, standing 15-18 inches tall. Depending on which parent breed your individual Cockapoo takes after, size can vary.
Cockapoos need plenty of exercise geared to their individual energy level and breed size. Cockapoo sizes can range from small (10-15lbs) to large (25-35lbs). A small Cockapoo requires more frequent but shorter exercise, while a large variety needs less frequent, but more lengthy sessions. Most Cockapoos need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, with the amount and level of exercise depending on the dog's energy level and age.
Cockapoos are renowned for their loving and affectionate natures, and in most cases, they form great relationships with other pets. They're intelligent and eager to please, so with proper training and socialization, most Cockapoos enjoy the company of other animals. Introducing another pet can be quite a challenge, especially if you already have a resident pet, but with patience and consistency, Cockapoos can be taught to respect other animals and get along with them harmoniously. The amount of time you should train your Cockapoo each day will vary depending on its age and behavior.
