Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are an increasingly popular breed of designer dog a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. These playful pooches are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and strong affection for their fur-families. Fun facts about Cockapoos include that they are hypoallergenic and generally do not shed, making them a desirable pet for those with allergies. Additionally, Cockapoos are usually easy to train due to their smarts and people-pleasing nature, and they usually get along well with other pets and people, small children included.
Cockapoos can be considered low-shedding due to their mix of two non-shedding breeds – the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. This hybrid can produce puppies with wavy, curly, and/or straight coats that rarely shed. Cockapoos may release some fur due to occasional shedding from blowouts, anality and shedding season. However, this is much less than most dogs and is generally limited to occasional brushing. Thus, Cockapoos are usually considered non-shedding, which makes them an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.
Cockapoos should not be fed anything that isn't specifically designed for dogs. Human food should be avoided as many of the ingredients can be dangerous for dogs to ingest. Generally, processed or junk food, such as chips and candy, has too much fat, sugar, or sodium and can cause weight gain. Grapes and raisins can be toxic, and dogs should never eat them. Onions, chives, garlic, and leeks are also dangerous due to the compound known as thiosulphate. This substance is toxic and can cause serious health problems if ingested.
Preparing for your new Cockapoo can be an exciting and overwhelming experience! First, it is important to create a safe and secure space tailored to your pup's needs. This may mean buying supplies like crates, beds, and small toys. Additionally, consider researching the breed to better understand their behavior and diet so you can create a healthy and appropriate living environment. It is also important to visit a veterinarian to make sure your pup is up to date on all vaccinations needed.
Cockapoos are considered medium-to-large dogs, measuring up to 19 inches in height and weighing up to 30 lbs. They are classified as a cross-breed and do not have a fixed size. Depending on the size of the poodle parent as well as the Cocker Spaniel parent, a Cockapoo puppy can vary in size significantly. Both toy size and standard size, when full-grown, can produce a larger dog. Generally, the lifespan of a Cockapoo is longer than most other cross-breeds, often living up to 18 years of age.
Cockapoos are an active breed and they need plenty of exercise in order to stay healthy and happy. On average, they usually require between 45 minutes to an hour of exercise every day. This can be in the form of a walk, a game of fetch, or an activity like swimming or agility classes. Mixing up the type of exercise will help to keep your Cockapoo interested. Exercising your Cockapoo on a regular basis is essential to keep them healthy and maintain their weight.
Generally, Cockapoos have a friendly and outgoing demeanour and do get along with other pets. They are known to be sociable with people and animals alike, and so tend to have no problem interacting with new housemates. However, as with all breeds, if Cockapoos are introduced to another pet correctly and with ease, the better the relationship between them will be. For example, slowly introducing them in a non-threatening environment can help strengthen the bond between the pair.
Training your Cockapoo should begin as soon as you welcome your pup home. Start by establishing house rules, being consistent with times and types of activities, and practicing positive reinforcement. To begin, have your pup respond to their name and teach the ‘sit’ command. If your pup isn't responding, make sure you are using positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise and healthy treats. Training your Cockapoo is all about consistency and patience. Break activity sessions into shorter intervals so as not to overwhelm your pup. Offer lots of encouragement and affection when your pup succeeds.
