Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are not their own distinct breed, but rather a hybrid, or "designer dog". They are a mix between the Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, and usually range between 10 to 30 pounds and 10 to 15 inches tall. Depending on the characteristics inherited from the parent breeds, Cockapoos can vary in appearance from long, wavy fur to tight curls, and they come in a variety of colors and patterns. They are typically labeled as a small breed and are very friendly and loyal, turning out to be wonderful family pets.
The Cockapoo has a soft, fluffy coat that is often wavy and may have a variety of colors, including cream, apricot, red, black, or chocolate. Cockapoos do not shed too heavily, making them great pets for people with allergies. They typically require brushing and/or combing every couple of days and must be groomed every 4-6 weeks to look their best. Depending on the length of the coat, it may require a professional grooming that will include trimming the fur and clipping nails on a regular basis.
Cockapoos are an intelligent and energetic breed, and require an appropriate diet to maintain its optimal health. As a mixed breed and descendants of both spaniels and poodles, there is no one definitive answer when it comes to what Cockapoos should eat. Generally, Cockapoos need good quality dry dog food with a minimum protein requirement of 18%. It is important to ensure that the kibble you choose is designed for small breeds so that your Cockapoo can digest it easily.
Preparing your home for a new Cockapoo is an exciting venture! Start by making sure the environment in your home is safe and comfortable. Remove any items that are toxic, dangerous, or could be a choking hazard, such as small children's toys or plants. Make sure all of your home's boundaries are pet proofed, including baby gates if needed, as well as all wiring and electrical cables. Ensure you have the appropriate food supplies, too. Provide plenty of bedding, and set up an area exclusively for your pup to relax and take naps.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from toy-sized measuring 8 to 12 inches tall, to the more standard sizes that measure between 12 and 15 inches tall. The larger Cockapoos measure between 15 and 20 inches tall and are often referred to as Maxi Cockapoo. Regardless of size, Cockapoos are active, intelligent, and friendly, and have become popular family companions. Furthermore, due to their hybrid nature, Cockapoos can come in many different colours, including black, white, cream, apricot, and red.
Yes, Cockapoos enjoy swimming. This is due to their Poodle ancestry, as Poodles are known for their affinity for water activities. Cockapoos have an eagerness to explore new environments, combined with their natural athleticism and swimming abilities, makes them great candidates for a day at the lake or beach. Additionally, swimming is a great way to keep your Cockapoo healthy.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are exceptionally gentle and affectionate, making them one of the best choices for families with small children. They're also extremely intelligent, so they learn quickly how to interact with children in a safe, gentle manner. On top of that, their gentle nature combined with their intelligence makes them great for training, teaching tricks and basic obedience as they grow older. Cockapoos are also hypoallergenic, so they won't aggravate any allergies.
Training a Cockapoo can be relatively easy, depending on the individual dog and their prior experiences. It's important to note that the breed can be somewhat independent and stubborn, so consistency and positive reinforcement are key. Punishing a Cockapoo for poor behavior can lead to mistrust, while offering praise and rewards when they show desired behaviors can go a long way. Establishing consistent commands from the beginning is also important as Cockapoos are intelligent and learn quickly.
