Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a relatively recent breed, beginning in the 1960s. They are a hybrid of purebred toy or miniature poodles and the American Cocker Spaniel. They are generally small and affectionate, making them a great family pet. Though their exact origin is unclear, hybridizing different breeds together was a popular breeding technique, allowing for the benefits of both breeds without the need for inbreeding. A fun fact about Cockapoos is that they come in a variety of colors and coat types depending on which parent breed their genes inherit.
The Cockapoo coat can vary depending on the genetic combination of the individual dog. Generally, the coat is a soft and dense mixture of its parent breeds – the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel. The coats may appear curly, or may hang in waves. Cockapoos will usually have a combination of the two coat types, especially as they age. The most common Cockapoo coat colors are yellow, black, silver, white, cream, or multicolor. All Cockapoo coats are considered low-shedding and hypoallergenic.
Cockapoos require a diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The best diet for your Cockapoo should provide complete and balanced nutrition with quality meat as the main source of protein. It should be free from artificial flavors, preservatives, and colors. When choosing a food for your Cockapoo, look for an AAFCO-approved formula (Association of American Feed Control Officials) which certifies the formula is nutritionally balanced. Premium brands, such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, or Pro Plan, may be better formulated for the breed than generic kibble.
To become the best puppy parent for your Cockapoo, start by developing a consistent routine. This will help your puppy learn expectations and create strong bonds with you. Make sure your home is puppy-proofed and the areas and objects your puppy can access are safe. Establish basic house rules in a friendly and positive way. Focus on rewarding your Cockapoo when they behave the way you want, rather than punishing them for any unwanted behavior. Provide your puppy with plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation; games, training classes and playtime with other friendly dogs can all be beneficial.
Cockapoos typically range in size from 15 to 20 inches in height and they can weigh anywhere from 10 to 25 pounds. This wide range of sizes is because Cockapoos are a hybrid breed. Though genetics and diet can make a difference in the eventual size of the Cockapoo puppy, you can expect most Cockapoos to be between the two extremes. Some lines tend to be smaller than others, so it’s important to look into the parent’s lineage to get an idea of the puppies’ size.
Physical activity is an important part of keeping your Cockapoo healthy and happy. Typically, it's recommended to walk your Cockapoo for at least 30 to 45 minutes a day. This should usually be split between two separate walks. However, the exact amount depends on their age, weight, health, and the breed of your Cockapoo. If you have a larger Cockapoo, they will need longer walks, or to incorporate more high-intensity activities, such as playing fetch, into their exercise routine.
Cockapoos are considered to be an excellent breed for families with children, as they tend to be great with kids of all ages. These dogs tend to be incredibly affectionate and are very loyal to their families. They are also known for their intelligence and have a knack for learning quickly, making them a great choice for teaching children about proper pet care. Best of all, their playful and easy-going personality also helps foster a bond with children. With consistent training and socialization, Cockapoos can even be trained to obey proper commands from kids.
Ideally, you should aim to train your Cockapoo for at least 20 minutes per day. This should be split into two 10 minute sessions a day, with one session in the morning and one in the afternoon. Training should be structured and should involve activities like teaching new commands or brushing up on existing ones. During each 10 minute session, offer your Cockapoo lots of praise and rewards so that they are encouraged to learn.
