Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid breed of dog, usually a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. As such, they don't belong to any one particular class of dog. At the same time, they have some specific characteristics in common with Spaniel and Poodle breeds, such as their cute, voluminous coat and their generally friendly, playful, intelligent personalities. Cockapoos may have longer noses, rounded heads, and floppy ears, as opposed to the boxier shape of the Poodle or flatter muzzle of the Cocker Spaniel.
Cockapoos are typically a hypoallergenic breed of dog that can be a great option for those with allergies. However, it’s important to note that Cockapoos still shed, so there are still potential allergens present in the environment. Allergy sufferers should limit their physical contact with the dog to determine their individual level of comfort and contact with the animal. Additionally, it’s recommended that the dog's coat and the home are regularly vacuumed and groomed to remove any excess animal dander and pollen that may be present in the environment.
Cockapoos are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle and they need a nutritionally balanced diet. Avoid giving them human food that is overly salty, sugary or greasy, such as chocolate, candy, spicy foods, fried foods, hot dogs, and processed or deli meats. Also do not feed them bones, raw vegetables, nuts, raisins, grapes, avocado, citric fruits, nutmeg or garlic, as these can cause serious health problems.
Preparing for a new Cockapoo can seem overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. First, think about your lifestyle and what possible commitments your pet will need. Determine how much time and money you can reasonably allocate to caring for a pet. Next, create a safe, comfortable space where your Cockapoo will call home. Stock up on essential items such as food, treats, chew toys, grooming products, and a first aid kit. Make sure you have the necessary pet supplies and schedule regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations. Most importantly, do plenty of research.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, primarily determined by the parent breeds. Miniature and Toy Poodles typically produce what are known as 'TEACUP' Cockapoos, who reach between 4 and 6 pounds at maturity. However, even if bred from Toy Poodles, Cockapoos may reach anywhere between 7 and 14 pounds. Similarly, Cockapoos bred from Miniature Poodles may reach between 13 and 18 pounds at adulthood. Standard Poodles produce the largest Cockapoos, resulting in a fully grown adult size between 19 and 25 pounds.
Absolutely! Taking your Cockapoo running is a fantastic way for them to get some quality exercise. However, due to their shorter muzzle, you should keep an eye on them to ensure they don't overheat or tire too quickly. Make sure you take your shoes and plenty of water for yourself and your pup; you don't want to get dehydrated. In milder climates, wait until the temperatures cool down before you go running. Also, take some food treats so that you can reward your pup during and after your runs for good behavior.
Cockapoos are known for being great family pets, especially when it comes to children. With their gentle dispositions, they are happy to curl up and watch a movie with the kids or even play a game. They are also protective of their families, making them great lookout dogs for children, and their intelligence makes them easy to train so that they learn the house rules quickly. Their hypoallergenic coat also makes them good pets for kids with allergies. All of these qualities make Cockapoos the perfect choice for families with children looking for a devoted, playful, and loyal companion.
Training a Cockapoo does take time and patience, however, they are typically a fairly easy breed to train. Cockapoos are quite intelligent dogs, and usually pick up new commands and instructions relatively quickly. This means that while training a Cockapoo can take some work, it is often much less of a challenge than training some other breeds. On top of all of this, since Cockapoos are known for being highly affectionate and eager to please, they tend to be extremely responsive to positive reinforcement and feedback, which makes them fairly easy to train.
