Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are an incredibly unique and interesting breed of dog. Not only are these dogs incredibly intelligent, loyal, and loving companions, but they can also have a wide variety of coat colors and textures. Generally falling within the range of a medium-sized breed, they usually sport a combination of their Poodle and Cocker Spaniel lineage with their bright and expressive personalities making them an incredibly popular choice in companion animals. In addition, they tend to be incredibly low-shedding and low-allergy animals, making them even more desirable and family friendly.
A Cockapoo's coat comes in a variety of lengths and colors, ranging from a thick, wooly undercoat to a shaggier, tousled coat. Generally speaking, they have a soft, wavy coat reminiscent of the Poodle, but also fur that's less curly and softer to the touch. The cockapoo coat comes in a variety of colors such as white, apricot, tan, black, or a mixture.
When considering the best food for a Cockapoo, it's important to evaluate their age, activity level, and any food sensitivities they may have. Quality ingredients should always play the biggest role when choosing a food. For younger Cockapoos, a puppy food designed to meet their nutritional needs during rapid growth is ideal, whereas an adult Cockapoo should have a food tailored to an active life with plenty of protein. Depending on the Cockapoo in question, you may wish to look for a formula designed for small breeds, as their stomachs tend to be sensitive.
To prepare your home for your new Cockapoo, you should make sure to have the essentials. Firstly, you will need to purchase food and water dishes, as well as quality food for your pup. You'll also want to buy chew toys and a bed or crate for them to sleep in, and a collar and leash for walks. Create a designated area for your pup to go to the bathroom, and set up baby gates or a pet door so your Cockapoo can go outside when needed.
Cockapoos come in three standard sizes Toy, Miniature, and Standard. Toy Cockapoos are usually 8-10 inches in height and weigh 4-6lbs. Miniature Cockapoos stand between 11-14 inches in height and most range between 6-12lbs in weight. Lastly, a Standard size Cockapoo will measure more than 14 inches in height and typically weigh more than 12lbs. Aside from the standard sizes, there are also teacup Cockapoos, which are smaller than the Toy size.
How much exercise your Cockapoo needs each day depends on their size, age, and general health. As a general guideline, a Cockapoo should receive at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day to stay healthy and happy. However, it is best to tailor the amount you walk your Cockapoo to their individual needs. Smaller cockapoos may require less, while larger ones may need more. Talk to your vet about the appropriate amount of exercise for your particular dog.
Cockapoos tend to make great pets for families with kids due to their outgoing and friendly nature. They are very playful and enjoy spending time with their humans especially children. Cockapoos are also very intelligent, so they learn commands quickly and obey relatively easily. A Cockapoo will respond well to patience and positive reinforcement when it comes to manners and behavior. This is why they make great family pets and are good with kids of all ages, as they are generally gentle and non-aggressive.
Training a Cockapoo should be approached in a systematic way; it's best to start with basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. First, you should establish a routine and stick to it; make sure that the command and the reward for its completion are consistent. Reward your Cockapoo with a treat when it follows the command correctly and with a verbal cue or physical cue, such as a pat on the head, when it does something correctly. In addition, it's important to use positive reinforcement versus trying to correct the Cockapoo's behavior with punishment.
