Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a popular hybrid dog. Developed back in the 1960s, this breed is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This combination creates an intelligent breed with a friendly temperament and their low-shedding coats are ideal for owners with allergies. They tend to be low maintenance when it comes to grooming, but owners should brush their Cockapoos regularly with a slicker brush or metal comb. Cockapoos are a companion breed and are known for their loving and loyal personalities.
The Cockapoo coat varies significantly depending on their parents' coat type, but one thing is certain—it's always silky, soft, and luxurious! Cockapoos typically have a single-layer coat with a wavy texture. The most common colors for their coats are white, cream, apricot, buff, and red. Cockapoos have a moderate to low-shedding coat, making them an ideal choice for people with allergies.
Cockapoos should not be fed chocolate, cakes, doughnuts, hard candy or other sugary treats that contain a lot of carbohydrates and/or fat. Additionally, they should not be fed nut butters,Certain fruits, like raisins and grapes, onions and garlic, as well as bones should be avoided, as these can cause intestinal distress. Uncooked meats, raw hide treats, and raw eggs can also cause illness or disease in Cockapoos.
Cockapoos may have different needs than other breeds. Generally, Cockapoos require regular exercise and mental stimulation. Grooming should be done at least once a week, or twice a week for heavier shedding breeds. With their friendly temperaments, Cockapoos also need the opportunity to be social and interact with people, other dogs, and even cats. If you plan to leave them home all day while you're at work, a companion dog or daily walks are recommended. Additionally, training and obedience is a must; investing in a professional dog trainer can be extremely beneficial.
Cockapoos vary in size and can range anywhere from toy to large, so it's not possible to definitively say yes or no to whether they are considered big dogs. Generally speaking, Cockapoos are usually classified as small to medium size dogs, since they usually grow to be between 7-18 pounds and 10-15 inches tall. However, Cockapoos can be bred with larger parent breeds, resulting in a Cockapoo that is closer to the medium-large size range.
Cockapoos require plenty of exercise to stay fit and healthy. Their energy level undulates depending on their age and activity level, but regular daily exercise is recommended to prevent them from becoming bored, destructive, or overweight. They typically need at least one hour of daily exercise, with two to three-hour walks or play sessions recommended for adult Cockapoos. To avoid over-exercising your puppy, it’s advisable to keep their sessions short but frequent before they reach adult size.
Generally, Cockapoos are very social and friendly dogs that get along well with other pets. They tend to be wonderful family pets, as they enjoy playing and interacting with people and animals alike. Of course, it's best to introduce them to your other pets gradually so they are both able to adjust and grow comfortable with each other, but Cockapoos usually do not have any issues making friends with pets of all shapes and sizes. With proper socialization, Cockapoos can make wonderful friends with other animals, and their loving dispositions make it easy for them to fit into any family.
Yes, Cockapoos are very smart. As a designer breed, they are considered to be extremely intelligent due to their mix of the highly intelligent Poodle and the playful and smart Cocker Spaniel. Cockapoos are highly trainable because they are eager to please their owners and can learn quickly. Training should not be limited to the basics, however, as Cockapoos enjoy learning more complex rituals and activities once their attention span is developed. Additionally, Cockapoos are very intuitive and can learn the behaviors and mannerisms of their owners, allowing them to form strong bonds.
