Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid dog breed that is a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. These friendly dogs are happiest when they are near their families and typically carry a happy and energetic personality. Although they are not recognized as an official breed themselves, Cockapoos are generally placed into the category of Toy, Miniature or Standard sized mixed breed dogs. Depending on the size of the parents, a Cockapoo could be any size from 5 pounds to over 30 pounds.
Whether or not Cockapoos will cause a person to have allergies depends on the individual, as different people will have different levels of allergies. In general, Cockapoos do not tend to cause more allergens than other breeds, and they have a low shedding coat which can make them easier to tolerate for people with allergies. That being said, some people are extremely sensitive even to the low allergens that Cockapoos may cause. It is best to discuss any possible allergies with a doctor before deciding whether or not to adopt a Cockapoo.
Cockapoos are not picky eaters, however they should stick to a balanced diet of high-quality kibble, vegetables, fruits, raw meats, and whole grains. Depending on the size, activity level, and age, Cockapoos should be fed anywhere from 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 cups of food, split from 2 to 3 meals a day. Owners should consult their vet to determine the right amount of food for their specific dog. It's important to provide a diet full of proteins, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cockapoo is an achievable goal with the right attitude and dedication. To start, do your research. Learn about the breed and what their needs will be as they grow. Look for tips on diet, exercise, socialization and training that can help your pup. Providing a safe and comfortable environment, with proper bedding and toys, is also important. When it comes to playtime, ensure you're using positive reinforcement. Practice patience and gentleness -these are essential for a well-behaved pup.
Cockapoos generally reach their full size when they are around 12 to 15 months old. On average, an adult Cockapoo will measure between 12” to 18” in height and weigh between 15 and 30 pounds. Some may grow to be a bit larger or smaller depending on the size of their parents. It is also affected by diet, exercise, and genetic factors such as the size of their ancestors. A Cockapoo's size may also slightly change over the course of their life if they gain or lose weight.
Cockapoos are known to be outgoing, energetic and often eager to please, all of which are qualities that make them great swimmers. Many Cockapoo owners report that their dogs love the water, and are very willing to jump in and start swimming. They're fast learners too if trained with patience and positive reinforcement, they can quickly learn how to swim. With their curly, water-resistant coat and affinity for swimming, Cockapoos are also great companions for outdoor activities like boating, paddle boarding, and kayaking.
Cockapoos are known to be extremely good-natured and affectionate dogs, and they generally make great companions for kids. Although the extent to which a Cockapoo will bond with and get along with kids will depend on its specific upbringing and temperament, the breed itself is very tolerant and eager to please. When properly introduced, Cockapoos typically show great patience and friendliness around children, and can make wonderful long-term family pets.
Training your Cockapoo is an important part of forming a strong bond with your furry friend. Begin by starting with simple commands, like 'sit' and 'stay.' Positive reinforcement—such as treats and praise—can be used to congratulate your pup for completing a task or a command. Furthermore, shorter training sessions several times a day can help maintain your pup's focus. Additionally, it will be beneficial to switch things up in your routine to help keep your dog's attention.
