Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a hybrid dog breed that is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Cockapoos are affectionate, loving, and make great family pets due to their intelligence and loyalty. They generally are about 20-30 pounds, depending on genetics and parent breeds. Physically, their coat can range from short to wavy or even curly and the color of the coat varies as well. Cockapoos typically do not require complicated grooming due to their low-shedding fur, and they can adapt to most living situations with ease.
Cockapoos are known to be a low-shedding breed of dog. They are considered to be a great choice for individuals who may have allergies to other breeds of dogs. The Cockapoo is a crossbreed dog, combining characteristics of a Cocker Spaniel and a Miniature Poodle. Both breeds are known to be excellent low-shedders. While Cockapoos may not be non-shedding, they do have a coat that is relatively easy to maintain and groom. They tend to produce less hair than other traditional breeds, leading to less visible shedding.
Cockapoos should not be fed certain foods as they can be dangerous to them. Foods to avoid include anything with a lot of fat, like bacon or sausage, as well as high-sugar treats like candy or desserts, and anything containing caffeine or alcohol. Cheese or dairy products are also not suitable for Cockapoos because they are sensitive to lactose. Additionally, they should not be fed a high-protein diet as it may lead to kidney issues, and any diets containing added preservatives, dyes, and additives should be avoided.
Before you bring your Cockapoo home, it is important to make sure you have all the items you and your pup will need. Be sure to stock up on necessary items such as a bed, crate, food and water dishes, and chew toys. Visit your vet to discuss necessary vaccinations and obtain any recommended preventative medicines. Take some time to research nutritional requirements and ensure you have the appropriate food for your particular breed. Familiarize yourself with training and grooming instructions so you can establish a routine for your dog.
Cockapoos generally grow to a mature size ranging from 10-18 inches in height and 10-20 pounds for adult dogs. Their size is determined by the genetic make up of their parent breeds, Toy or Miniature Poodle and Cocker Spaniel. If they take after the Toy Poodle parent, they will stay smaller while the Miniature Poodle parent will have a bigger influence on their size. Cockapoos inherited from Miniature Poodles can grow as tall as 15-18 inches and weigh up to 20 pounds.
The amount of time you should walk your Cockapoo every day largely depends on their age, size, and energy level. Generally speaking, a healthy Cockapoo should take at least one walk per day that lasts at least 30 minutes, in which they are able to cover at least 1 mile. This, combined with other forms of daily exercise, should meet the needs of most Cockapoos. That being said, if your Cockapoo is particularly active, you may need to increase its daily walks to an hour or more per day.
Cockapoos are an excellent choice for first-time pet owners due to their intelligence, enthusiasm and loyalty. As a hybrid breed, Cockapoos possess many of the same traits as other more popular dogs, but they are typically found to be less aggressive in nature. They are also usually quite small, so they need less space and exercise than larger dogs. Additionally, Cockapoos have a non-shedding coat, which can make them a great pick for people who suffer from allergies.
Absolutely! Cockapoos are very intelligent, in fact, they are widely recognized as the most intelligent and trainable of all hybrid dog breeds. They are incredibly quick learners, so it's important to provide them with early, ongoing socialization and training to ensure they continue to mature into smart, well-mannered adult dogs. Cockapoos succeed easily in learning commands and tricks and they are eager to please their owners. Furthermore, they are incredibly affectionate which makes training them a pleasure.
