Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid dog, created by breeding a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle. They generally fit into the Toy or Miniature breed classifications and are known for their intelligence, affection toward owners, and low-shedding coats. Cockapoos are beloved for their fun-loving personality and often display characteristics from both parent breeds. They can love to play fetch, and have a strong eagerness to please their owners. Because of their higher intelligence levels, they can also be easier to train than many other breeds.
Although Cockapoos are not classified as hypoallergenic, they are known to have low to moderate levels of shedding. This means they produce considerably less fur than other breeds, so you will have to deal with less mess and pet hair in your home. Cockapoos, however, are not completely non-shedding, so you should still expect minimal shedding from your pet. With regular brushing and maintenance, you can help reduce shedding even more.
Cockapoos are a mix of two different breeds the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle so they have a variety of nutritional needs. As such, you should feed your Cockapoo a balanced diet of high-quality, nutrient-dense dog food that meets their dietary requirements, including protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals. Depending on your Cockapoo's activity level, age, and size, you may want to consider feeding them either dry kibble, wet food, raw or homemade food.
When you are preparing for your new Cockapoo, the most important thing to do is research the breed. Learn all about their temperament, needs, likes, and dislikes. Ensure you have appropriate supplies such as a crate, bedding, grooming tools, food, toys, and treats. A long walk every day will help to keep your Cockapoo physically active and mentally stimulated. Socialization with other people and animals is also necessary for puppies. Get your Cockapoo vaccinated and ensure you stay up to date with their vaccinations.
Cockapoos can be considered big dogs due to their size, but typically they are not as large as some other breeds. Many Cockapoos weigh between 10 and 20 pounds, depending on their parent breeds, with the average cockapoo being around 15 pounds. Cockapoos also tend to have a moderate lifespan, usually between 10 and 15 years, so they are a commitment to own. However, even with their small size, Cockapoos are very adaptable and can fit into many different living situations, making them great pets for families of all sizes and ages.
Cockapoos absolutely love to swim! These friendly, smart, and outgoing pups are both intelligent and energetic, so swimming can make for a great outlet to expend some of their natural enthusiasm and curiosity. Swimming also offers Cockapoos the opportunity to be social and form relationships with their human and other animal family members. Many Cockapoos are quite comfortable in the water and have no problem dipping their paws in for a quick swim. For those still getting used to it, being around water can be calming and sometimes fun, depending on the pup's personality.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos are known for being excellent family companions and are particularly well-suited to living with kids. They tend to be sweet and gentle, however, like any other breed, it's a good idea to socialize a Cockapoo pup early on to ensure they become used to being around children. With early socialization and proper training, Cockapoos generally enjoy spending time around kids and can even become very protective over them.
Training a Cockapoo is a great way to ensure they develop healthy habits and establish a positive relationship with their owner. Before starting any kind of training, however, you should ensure your pet is calm and paying attention to you. Start with basic obedience training, praising and rewarding your Cockapoo for good behavior using treats and verbal approval. Consistency is key, so be sure to stick to the same command for the same action and be patient.
