Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are hybrid dogs that result from the cross-breeding of the Cocker Spaniel and the Toy Poodle. This combination creates a highly intelligent, adaptable, and highly trainable medium-sized pet. They are an energetic breed that need daily exercise and playtime to stay healthy. Cockapoos can vary greatly in appearance and fall into one of four categories: the Toy group (weighing 10-14 lbs., 14-18" tall), the Miniature group (weighing 15-20 lbs.
Cockapoos are known for their minimal shedding. Their coat is usually wavy and soft and may require frequent brushing. Although they shed less than other breeds, they can still produce some hair, and regular brushing is an important part of reducing the amount of shed hair. To minimize shedding further, proper nutrition, regular grooming, and a healthy lifestyle of daily exercise are all very important. Additionally, by regularly cleaning your cockapoo's coat, you can help reduce the likelihood of hair shedding.
Cockapoos are known to be a very healthy and hearty breed of designer dog. As with most dogs, their diet should consist of quality protein sources like chicken or beef, combined with fresh fruits and vegetables. Additionally, most Cockapoos would do well with carbohydrates such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, and oats for energy. It's important to include a mix of both wet and dry food to ensure your Cockapoo is receiving all the necessary nutrients and vitamins, and also to provide variety.
Purchasing supplies for your Cockapoo before bringing one home is essential. Make sure you have the basics, such as food and water bowls, a bed, training pads, a collar or harness with an ID tag, and chew toys. A good brush and regular grooming supplies are also important, as Cockapoos have thick hair and need regular grooming to stay healthy and prevent tangles. It is also a good idea to invest in a crate for your pup for transitions and for nighttime sleeping.
Cockapoos can range anywhere from 8-15 inches (20-38 cm) in height and usually weigh between 12-25 pounds (5-11 kg). However, the size of an adult Cockapoo varies according to the size of its parent breeds, such as the Miniature Poodle or Toy Poodle. Generally, Teacup Cockapoos will be the smallest and tend to stay between 8-11 inches (20 28 cm).
Generally speaking, a Cockapoo should get around 30 minutes of exercise per day, which can be broken up into multiple shorter walks. How long and how often your walks should be will depend on your particular pup's breed and age, as well as their current health and energy level. There are advantages to both shorter and longer walks, but whatever length of walk you decide on, be sure to bring plenty of water, a few treats, as well as poop bags to clean up after. Longer afternoon and evening walks can help provide mental and physical stimulation and help your pup stay alert and active.
Cockapoos can make excellent pets for families with children. Often described as "lapdogs," Cockapoos are known for their loving, loyal and affectionate personalities. They are also possess varying levels of energy, making them an ideal playmate for kids of all ages. Cockapoos must be extensively socialized from a young age to ensure they become accustomed to interacting with children and should always be supervised and taught how to behave appropriately around kids. With proper training and socialization, Cockapoos can be a loving, faithful addition to any family with children.
Training a Cockapoo is certainly possible, but it will require patience and dedication on your part. Cockapoos are highly intelligent and eager to please their owners, so consistent and positive reinforcement are essential for successful training. Like other breeds, Cockapoos should be started off on the right foot with basic obedience instructions such as sit, stay, and come. It's also important to remember to provide plenty of love and give your pooch plenty of praise during the training process. The more consistent you are with the training, the better your results will be.
