Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are hybrids of the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, and are classified as a "designer" breed. The breed is popular for its gentle and loving nature plus its low-shedding coat. There are two types of coat texture for Cockapoos, the smooth-coated variety which looks similar to a Cocker Spaniel, and the Curly-coated type which is similar to a Poodle's coat.
Whether or not Cockapoos will cause you to have allergies is highly individualized and depends on numerous factors. Those with known animal allergies should consult with a healthcare provider to be certain before introducing a Cockapoo to their home. Cockapoos produce less dander than many other breeds of dog, and while some people may still be allergic, others find their allergies can be managed with regular brushing and proper grooming practices.
Cockapoos are a crossbreed of the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle, so it's important to feed them a diet that meets their needs. Their diet should be made with high-quality, grain-free dog food that is specifically designed for small-breed dogs. You should also occasionally feed your Cockapoo some variety and wet food that contains plenty of proteins, vitamins, minerals, and natural sources of fiber.
As a puppy parent, you have the responsibility of creating an environment that is best for your cockapoo. First, make sure that you are familiar with the expectations of owning a cockapoo. Learn about their specific needs for food, exercise, and grooming. Second, provide adequate training and socialization for your pup. This means teaching your pup skills like house training and basic commands, as well as introducing them to other people, animals, and environments. Third, make sure your pup receives adequate rest and mental stimulation. Finally, give your cockapoo plenty of love and attention.
Cockapoos are not typically considered big dogs, although there is some slight variation depending on the specific breed. For instance, the miniature Cockapoo, which is a cross between a miniature Poodle and an American or English Cocker Spaniel, is usually no more than 10 lbs in weight and 12 inches in height. But on the other end of the spectrum, the standard Cockapoo, which is a mix between a standard Poodle and an American or English Cocker Spaniel, tends to stand at 15-18 inches in height and weigh in at 40-65 lbs.
Cockapoos need regular exercise to stay healthy and maintain a good weight. Though the length of their daily workout varies and depends on their age, size, and health, in general they need around 30 minutes of physical activity a day. This could involve walks, play sessions, swimming, agility courses, or Frisbee. A combination of activities from this list is important to keep them engaged and interested in playtime.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos have a fairly amiable disposition and are known for getting along with other pets. As with any pet, socialization from a young age is key in ensuring harmonious co-existence with other pets in the same home. Introductions should be made gradually and in a controlled setting, such as outside on a leash, away from the canine or feline's familiar environment. Among canine companions, Cockapoos can be a great addition as they bond quickly and have an eagerness to please their pack.
To adequately train a Cockapoo, it is recommended to set aside 15-20 minutes of dedicated training each day. This consistency is important in order for your dog to understand what behavior is expected of them. However, with the right attitude and plenty of positive reinforcement and patience, you may find that more than 20 minutes a day is necessary. Think of it as quality time between you and your Cockapoo as opposed to a chore. Make it fun for both of you! It's important to remember that the goal isn't to expect perfection after the first few sessions.
