Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are truly one of a kind! Often described as sweet, cheerful and intelligent, they are amongst some of the most popular dogs for a variety of reasons. One of the most interesting things about Cockapoos is the fact that no two are alike. Each one will have its own unique characteristics that the breeders have come to recognize as inherent to Cockapoos. As a combination of two of the most popular purebred dogs, this makes the cockapoo a commonly accepted hybrid.
Cockapoos, a crossbreed between a Cockerspaniel and a Poodle, have become increasingly popular since they were first developed in the 1950s. Most Cockapoos are considered non-shedding dogs since they inherit the non-shedding genes of the Poodle, but that doesn't mean they are totally free from shedding. Cockapoos may still need to be brushed and combed to keep their coat free from matting. While Cockapoos do shed less than traditional breeds, they still need regular grooming and maintenance to remain healthy.
Cockapoos have different nutritional requirements than other types of dogs, so selecting the best food for them is important. Because Cockapoos are active dogs, high-quality protein should be the main ingredient in their food. Look for a kibble or canned food that has deboned meat and/or vegetable proteins, alongside natural fats for energy needs and fiber to help with digestion. Depending on the size of their breed and activity level, Cockapoos also need optimum levels of vitamins and minerals for healthy growth.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Cockapoo includes taking both short-term and long-term measures to ensure they have the healthiest and happiest life possible. First, ensure their day-to-day needs are taken care of: provide a balanced yet nutritious diet, give plenty of exercise and ensure they get plenty of rest. Consider enrolling them in puppy training classes; this way, your puppy will get used to socializing with other dogs and learn basic commands.
Cockapoos are usually considered to be small dogs, typically weighing 10-30 lbs. and standing anywhere from 10-18 inches tall. They can usually easily fit in the palm of a hand or purse but still have plenty of energy and composure. Cockapoos have the best traits of both parent breeds, Poodles and Cocker Spaniels, which means they often don’t shed or have allergies. They generally have a very gentle disposition, friendly towards people and other pets.
It is important to walk your Cockapoo a minimum of 30 minutes per day in order to maintain their health and vitality. Short walks, for a total of at least 30 minutes, are recommended each day to keep your pup fit and active. However, depending on your pet's activity level, adding additional walk time can be beneficial for both you and your Cockapoo. Consider taking more leisurely strolls around the block or visiting the park for a more vigorous workout.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos make great family pets that get along well with other pets. This sociable hybrid breed is notably loyal and thrive when they have companions to cuddle up with. Your Cockapoo's individual temperament and interactions with other animals will ultimately determine whether they become friends with other cats, dogs, and other companion animals. As a responsible pet owner, you can do your part by monitoring and supervising your Cockapoo while around other pets and encouraging positive interactions. Positive reinforcement during playtime and walks can also help to foster relationships and proudly form a happy multi-pet household.
Training a Cockapoo is not necessarily easy, but with consistent effort it can be achieved. Cockapoos are an intelligent breed and respond well to positive reinforcement, gentle guidance, and consistent instruction. They learn quickly, but they also need consistency. That means staying firm when teaching obedience, potty, and house training rules, and setting up a schedule of regular activities and rewards. It's a good idea to involve the entire family in the training process and be consistent with dog language. Training should also include plenty of socialization around people, animals, and other stimuli.
