Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, creating a small and very smart companion that loves being around its family. They have fluffy coats that can be straight, wavy or curly and they need to be groomed regularly. Cockapoos are very friendly, outgoing and so small that they make excellent apartment pets. They can be quite energetic, so long walk and playtime each day is crucial. They tend to be easy to train and respond to positive reinforcement, but may also be vocal when excited.
Cockapoos are hybrid dogs that are bred from a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, and these two breeds are each known for their low shedding coats. Since Cockapoos have coats that are a combination of these two breeds, their coats are also generally low shedding. It's important to stress that all dogs shed to some degree, and this includes Cockapoos, but Cockapoos are generally known to shed less than other certain breeds of dogs due to their hybrid origin.
Cockapoos are typically a healthy, easy-to-maintain breed of dog. A well-balanced diet is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle for them, and they enjoy a variety of foods. Ideally, you should feed your Cockapoo a complete and balanced diet that is formulated specifically for the breed and contains all the necessary nutrients. A quality, grain-free kibble that contains real meat as the first ingredient, plus essential vitamins and minerals, is an excellent choice.
Cockapoos have some special requirements that owners should be aware of. In order to keep Cockapoos healthy they should be groomed regularly to minimize shedding, have their ears checked periodically to prevent infection, and get plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation to control behavior issues. Diet is also important to ensure they are getting complete nutrition and to avoid obesity. They are intelligent and active, so they require consistent yet patient training. Socialization is essential to help prevent fearfulness and undesired behaviors. All of these care requirements will help Cockapoos live a longer, happier life with their owners.
Generally Cockapoos can range anywhere from 10-20 lbs in weight and stand between 10-15 inches tall at the shoulder. The size and weight of a Cockapoo will depend on the size of the parents and the generation; with Toy Cockapoos, classified as a Family Pet Dog, ranging in weight from 6-12 lbs. Miniature Cockapoos range from 13-18 lbs and Standard Cockapoos having a maximum weight of 20 lbs. Therefore, Cockapoos can come in a range of sizes from quite small to relatively large.
Every Cockapoo is different and has different needs, so there isn't a single answer to this question. Generally speaking, your Cockapoo should get at least 20-30 minutes of exercise a day. This could include a walk, fetch, swimming, running, or a series of smaller activities, such as playing in the backyard or going on trips to the dog park. Exercise helps keep your pup's muscles healthy and also helps keep their mental health in peak condition.
Cockapoos are known for being social, friendly, and interactive dogs that get along well with children. They are highly intelligent and eager-to-please animals, meaning they are easy to train and naturally want to please their owners. Furthermore, Cockapoos tend to be less territorial and, therefore, enjoy intermingling with all members of the family and the guests that come and visit. As a result, they are often called "velcro dogs" because they are so loyal, loving, and affectionate.
Training a Cockapoo can be very straightforward if you remain positive and consistent when teaching commands. This breed is known for being eager to please and smart, so following a few basic steps and staying patient is sure to yield results. Start by selecting a few simple commands like “sit” and “stay” and practice multiple times each day. Offer rewards for a job well done, such as a treat, praise or a game. As your dog begins to master the commands, gradually move on to longer and more complex instructions.
