Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid breed that is a mix of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. As a result, they do not fit into a certain class of dog--they are not considered a purebred breed. Cockapoos are small to medium sized dogs that range in size from 10-30 pounds, depending on which parent they most closely resemble. The coat of a Cockapoo may be smooth, wavy, or curly, and color can vary from solid to a mixture of colors.
It is possible to develop allergies to Cockapoos, but it is not a common occurrence. The type of allergies that a person could develop from a Cockapoo will depend on the individual. People may develop reactions to the breed's coat, saliva, urine, and even food allergies. There is also the possibility of developing an allergy to the dog's dander, which is the microscopic particles of skin that Cockapoos shed. However, it's important to note that some Dog breeds can produce lower amounts of allergens and others higher amounts, so always research the breed you are considering.
Cockapoos should not be fed foods rich in fat, sugar, or salt, as these ingredients can have a negative impact on their health. Certain items, such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, garlic, and onions, are also toxic to cockapoos and should not be given under any circumstances. Avoid table scraps, bones, and rawhide chews; and limit the amount of dog treats they receive in order to prevent overeating. It is best to purchase recommended commercial pet food and offer healthy, single-ingredient treats.
Having all of the necessary items to care for your new Cockapoo is essential before bringing your new pet home. A couple of basics you should make sure to have are a collar and harness, a second form of identification (such as a microchip), grooming supplies, food and water bowls and dishes, a bed or crate, cleaning supplies, a good quality Puppy-formulated food, toys to help keep them busy, and some treats. Depending on your Cockapoo's age and activity level, a leash might be a good addition too.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes. Typically they are classified by weight into toy (less than 10 pounds), miniature (10-15 pounds), and standard (16+ pounds). However, you may also find so-called "Teacup" Cockapoos, which are exceptionally small and typically weigh less than 5 pounds. The breeders who produce these micro-sized Cockapoos do so through selective breeding based on size, but there are no guarantees that these pups will stay small as they can still grow out of their size.
Cockapoos are known for their athleticism and intelligence, making them a great breed for owners looking for an active pooch. Exercise needs vary from dog to dog, but on average, Cockapoos need 30-60 minutes of exercise per day. This should include at least two 30-minute brisk walks, play time, and a game of fetch. For dogs that are older, have joint issues, or have been sedentary, shorter and more frequent sessions of exercise (15 minutes) are recommended to keep them healthy.
Yes, Cockapoos tend to be a great breed for first-time owners. They are intelligent, friendly, and full of energy. Cockapoos are typically hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for those with allergies. This breed does require some grooming and regular exercise to maintain its well-adjusted personality, but generally stays within manageable boundaries. Cockapoos are excellent with children due to their social nature and gentle disposition, making them a great choice for first-time pet owners looking for a family companion.
Training a Cockapoo can be a rewarding experience for both you and your pup! First, start basic obedience training while your pup is young like sit, stay, come, and heel. Then start working on more advanced commands like roll over, give paw, and even go to bed. Working with your pup on these commands will not only increase the bond between the two of you, but it will also help your pup become better-behaved overall. Additionally, providing your pup with plenty of mental stimulation via activities such as puzzle games, hide and seek, and scent work is also important.
