Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a hybrid breed of dog that is a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They typically stand at around 12-15 inches, and usually weigh about 15-25 pounds when full-grown. They have traits from both parent breeds their coat may range from wavy to curly, and they also inherit the friendly and affectionate personalities of both. Cockapoos are popular for their ease of grooming/training, being sociable, and adaptability to all types of homes.
Managing allergies with Cockapoos is possible through a combination of regular grooming and lifestyle changes. Grooming should include regular brushing of the coat and skin to remove dander and other allergens that can trigger a reaction. Bathing your Cockapoo on a regular basis can also help to reduce allergens that irritate people with allergies. Additionally, you should vacuum frequently and avoid feather and down products such as pillows, bedding, and stuffed animals. An air purifier may also help catch any additional dander and allergens in the air.
Cockapoos should not be fed chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, avocados, macadamia nuts, or alcohol. These foods can be toxic and cause digestive problems as well as anxiety, vomiting, and diarrhea. It's best to feed your Cockapoo specifically designed veterinary nutrition that is best suited for their unique dietary needs. Common human food may contain artificial ingredients, too much sugar and/or sodium, and lack the nutrition Cockapoos require. Anything that is unhealthy or unsafe for us can be even more damaging to our Cockapoos.
Cockapoos do have some special requirements that should be met when caring for them. They need to receive regular physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction. In addition, they should be groomed on a regular basis to ensure their coats are healthy and free of matting. Feeding a nutritionally balanced diet that meets the breed’s specific health needs is also essential for a Cockapoo’s health and wellbeing.
Cockapoos typically come in three different sizes, which tend to correspond to the size of the two parental breeds used in the crossing namely Toy, Miniature and Standard Cockapoos. The Toy Cockapoos usually measure between 9 to 14 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 4 to 8 pounds while Miniature Cockapoos usually measure over 14 inches tall and weigh up to 14 pounds. Standard Cockapoos, on the other hand, measure up to 19 inches tall and weigh in at between 15 to 20 pounds.
Absolutely! Cockapoos love to swim and make excellent swimmers, thanks to their coat and body shape which are designed for water-play. People often think that because they are a cross-breed, Cockapoos may not have the best swimming ability, but that isn’t true as they can usually swim circles around other dogs. Most people already know that as Cockapoos have Poodle blood in them, they get their excellent swimming abilities passed down from the Poodle breed.
Yes, Cockapoos are known for their affinity towards children and tend to get along with them very well. Cockapoos can easily adapt to a child's environment due to their inherent personality traits. They are known to be affectionate, obedient, and gentle with kids, making them a fun and loving companion to have around. As long as a Cockapoo is properly socialized and trained, they will make the perfect playmate for children of all ages.
Training your Cockapoo should start as soon as you bring your pup home. Set aside time every day to train, and be consistent to ensure successful results. You'll want to start with basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', 'come', 'leave it', and 'drop it'. Use validation and encouragement, like treats or playtime, to show your pup that good behavior is rewarded. As your dog's skills improve, you can add more advanced commands such as 'heel' and 'down'.
