Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are truly unique and fascinating dogs. They are a mix of the small, smart Poodle and the loyal yet curious Cocker Spaniel, creating the perfect cuddly companion for people of all ages. What makes them so interesting is their hybrid vigor the combination of the two parent breeds gives Cockapoos higher intelligence, greater immunities, longer lifespans, and a variety of attractive coats. Furthermore, Cockapoos are incredibly lively and friendly, getting along with humans and other animals alike.
Cockapoos are considered to be low-shedding dogs, compared to other breeds, and do not shed excessively. They are usually considered to be a hypoallergenic dog, since the combination of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle creates hybrid vigor which in turn means a breed often healthier than either parent. While Cockapoos do not typically shed in the traditional sense, they do require regular and consistent grooming to keep their coats healthy and free of mats or tangles.
Cockapoos should not be fed simple carbohydrates, such as chips and candy, as these provide little to no nutritional value. They should also not be fed rawhide chews as these can easily be swallowed and can lead to intestinal blockages. Additionally, human foods and snacks that are high in fat and salt should be avoided, such as bacon, sausage, and french fries; fat can lead to pancreatic issues and salt can cause water retention and electrolyte imbalances.
Cockapoos are loving and devoted companion animals that require specific care to stay happy and healthy. They need adequate exercise, daily brushing, regular grooming, and nutrition tailored to their individual needs and activity level. Being a mix of two very different breeds, their physical and mental needs vary widely across the breed, and routine checkups with a trusted vet are essential to keeping up with any special requirements a Cockapoo may need.
Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from tiny to large. The Toy or Teacup Cockapoo is the smallest of the bunch, generally weighing between 4 to 6 pounds and standing between 6 10 inches tall. Both of these sizes are usually considered to be the same. The Miniature Cockapoo, which is the most popular of the three, typically weighs between 13 to 18 pounds and stands 11 to 14 inches tall. Lastly, the Standard Cockapoo is the largest and typically weighs 19 to 25 pounds and stands 15 to 18 inches tall at the shoulder.
The recommended amount of daily exercise for a Cockapoo varies depending upon their age, health, and lifestyle. Generally, 30 minutes to 1 hour per day is a good standard. This should be broken into 2 or more walks, as well as engaging activities like running, fetch, or agility. Healthy puppies should be allowed up to 2 hours of exercise each day, including walks and other activities. If a Cockapoo has pre-existing medical conditions, their daily exercise will need to be monitored and adjusted according to their health. This should be discussed with the Cockapoo’s veterinarian.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos are quite fond of children and typically make for great family pets. This is mainly due to their temperament, which is very gentle and nurturing. As popular companion dogs, Cockapoos are intelligent, obedient, and highly trainable and respond well to commands. They also have an instinctual desire to please and be around their owners constantly. As such, Cockapoos and kids often have a lot of fun together, where the Cockapoo can safely give and receive love, attention, and affection.
Training your Cockapoo is important to ensure your pup has pleasant interactions with other animals and people. A good starting place is to create a plan and stick to a consistent training schedule. Make sure you use positive reinforcement, such as treats or verbal praise, when he or she performs a desired behavior. Effective communication is also key to teaching your pup commands; stay consistent with the words you use to refer to particular behaviors or exercises. Additionally, ensure breaks are taken in between training sessions, as dogs can only take in so much information at once.
