Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a designer breed of dog, developed by crossing a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Generally, they are small to medium-sized dogs and tend to have a gentle, outgoing, and intelligent personality. This breed is growing in popularity due to the fact they commonly possess an abundant coat similar to Poodles, while still retaining the more laid-back nature of the Cocker Spaniel.
Managing allergies with Cockapoos is possible. One way to reduce the risk of an allergic reaction when introducing a Cockapoo to your home is to minimize contact with any potential allergens. An easy way to do this is to brush your Cockapoo regularly to reduce dander. Additionally, it's wise to keep your pet away from other pets with potential allergens and, if necessary, invest in an air filtration system that removes pet dander from the air. And, if you're cleaning your pet or your home, use specific allergen-reducing products.
Cockapoos should never be fed food with high fat content or anything containing artificial sweeteners, preservatives, or colorings, as this could lead to digestive upset or even make them sick. It is best for Cockapoos to stick to a diet of high-quality, nutritionally balanced kibble. Additionally, human food should generally be avoided, as many items, such as onions, garlic, chocolate, nuts, and anything containing sugar, can be harmful to dogs.
Before bringing home a Cockapoo, it's important to make sure you have the essential supplies and equipment needed to properly care for your new pup. You'll want to buy comfortable and durable bedding, a crate for training and housebreaking, age-appropriate toys, soft blankets, and food and water dishes. Chew-resistant that won't break easily will help keep your puppy from getting into mischief. Grooming supplies are essential, too, such as brushes, clippers, and pet shampoo.
Cockapoos come in a range of sizes, from the tiny Toy Cockapoo (5-12 pounds) to the small Miniature Cockapoo (13-18 pounds) to the medium Maxi Cockapoo (19-25 pounds). While there are some larger Cockapoos, these are not typically found in the United States as they are more common in Europe. Generally speaking, the Toy and Miniature Cockapoos require less exercise than larger breeds, but they will still need daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and content.
Cockapoos are active, intelligent dogs, and need plenty of exercise—at least two, if not three, long daily walks, plus additional activity, like playtime and running with other pets, to reach their exercise goals. Depending on their age, they should be getting anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours of activities a day. Exercise helps Cockapoos stay healthy and alert, releases pent-up energy, and strengthens the bond between pet and owner.
Generally, Cockapoos get along with kids very well! They are a breed that loves to play and have fun, and children are often the perfect partner in crime. As long as Cockapoos are properly socialized, their relationship with children can be a great one. Training early on may help your Cockapoo learn appropriate behaviors and boundaries, plus the usual reward system reinforces the good behavior. Adult supervision when kids and Cockapoos are together is a must, so everyone stays safe, comfortable, and happy.
Cockapoos are very smart dogs known for their intelligence and loyal personalities. They are often praised for recognizing quickly and remembering commands and training lessons. This is due to their hybrid characteristics, combining the intelligence of a Cocker Spaniel with the problem-solving nature of a Poodle. By nature, Cockapoos are eager to please and seem to understand their owners. They can easily learn new tricks and are constantly looking for ways to interact and make their owners happy.
