Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a hybrid breed that is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. Classified as a designer breed, they are usually categorized as a far-ranging group of "small mixed-breed dogs." Cockapoos were introduced to the public in the sixties and have become extremely popular due to their gentle yet outgoing temperaments, intelligence, and keen ability to socialize. They come in a variety of fur colors and their sizes range from toy (six to 14 pounds) to Maxi (15 to 23 pounds).
The Cockapoo coat typically has a fairly tight curl with fine and silky hair. They may have a single layer coat or double layer, depending on the coat type that is passed on from their parents. The coat is relatively easy to groom, but due to the tight curls, it does require regular brushing. The hair is usually very soft to the touch and you can expect your Cockapoo to shed very little compared to other breeds. Their coats generally come in a wide variety of colors, including cream, white, apricot, black, chocolate and red.
It is best to avoid feeding your Cockapoo human food such as sugary snacks, fatty meats, chocolate, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, high-sodium foods, or anything containing the artificial sweetener xylitol. Instead, feed your Cockapoo quality dog food formulated specifically for their breed and size. If you do decide to feed your Cockapoo people food, stick to unprocessed recipes without added salt or sugar. Remember that treats should only make up a small portion of your pet’s diet to avoid causing gastrointestinal issues or a unhealthy weight gain.
To become the best puppy parent for your Cockapoo, make sure to give them lots of love and attention and regularly provide them with quality exercise, nutrition, veterinary care, and some basic obedience training. Be a responsible pet owner by learning about your breed and being committed to supporting their mental and physical health. Spay or neuter them to prevent the risk of certain diseases or unexpected litters. Provide consistent structure and routine for your puppy to help them adjust to their new home quickly and easily. Speak to your veterinarian about what kind of food, treats, and supplements are best for your pup.
While Cockapoos are generally considered to be small or medium-sized dogs, depending on their particular genetics, they can occasionally grow to a larger size. This tends to depend on a combination of factors, including the ratio of Cockerspaniel to Poodle in a Cockapoo cross, as well as the size of the parent breeds. Generally, larger Cockapoos may reach heights between 17-20 inches, while weighing 40-50 pounds. Many Cockapoo owners find that their pups reach a peak weight between 4-6 years of age.
The amount of daily walking your Cockapoo should receive will vary depending on their age and level of physical activity. Generally speaking, it is recommended that a Cockapoo is walked for at least 20-30 minutes each day. For younger puppies, it’s important to keep walks short and sweet, while for more mature Cockapoos, between 30-60 minutes of daily walking is ideal in order to provide adequate exercise and ensure a happy, healthy lifestyle.
Generally speaking, Cockapoos tend to do well with kids, given that they are raised in an environment that promotes patience and respect for both the child and the pet. They are a very social breed and are very affectionate towards their humans. Cockapoos almost always show signs of happiness upon receiving attention and have been known to be very patient and gentle especially with children. They usually have a naturally calm demeanor and can be fairly easy to train. With the right environment and consistent training, a Cockapoo can develop a strong bond with a child, creating an incredibly loyal relationship.
Cockapoos are often considered to be highly intelligent and capable of quickly learning simple tasks. They have an eagerness to please their owners which makes them highly trainable and eager to learn new things. They easily pick up on cues from their environment and respond to commands quickly. Cockapoos are also easily adaptable to different types of training, whether it be agility, obedience, or just basic commands at home. They have an uncanny ability to remember even the most intricate details, which makes them a great pet for owners who want a well-trained, highly intelligent dog.
