Questions & Answers
A Cockapoo is a hybrid breed of dog created by crossing a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. In many cases, the Cockapoo is a relatively small dog weighing anywhere between ten and twenty-five pounds. Unfortunately, this can mean smaller breeds require more time and energy in terms of grooming. They typically have a soft, wavy or somewhat curly coat that can range from medium to long in length, and tend to come in white, tan, buff, or black.
A Cockapoo coat has a soft, light texture that is denser around the neck and chest areas with feathery touches on the legs and ears. It can vary in length, but generally it is quite low maintenance. The coat will require weekly brushing and bathing once a month, so the ongoing grooming process is well worth the effort. The texture of the coat changes over time, initially a soft wavy feel but then a medium length wavy coat develops as they age. Generally the coat is cream, tan, red, or white, or a combination of the four.
Feeding your Cockapoo isn't a difficult process, but there are various factors to consider to make sure that it's getting the right nutrition and the best food for its breed. Cockapoos need a high-quality diet that is ideally made from lean sources of proteins, complex carbohydrates, and good fats. Look for kibble that is made with all-natural ingredients and is designed specifically for Cockapoos. Another option is to feed your pup wet food, followed by all-natural dog treats as an occasional reward.
To prepare your home for a new Cockapoo, you'll want to equip it with a few essential items. Start by buying age-appropriate toys and enrichment items which stimulate your dog's senses. Provide chew items, such as nylon bones, to satisfy their instinct to chew. Choose a comfortable dog bed with a removable, washable cover, and place it in an area of your home where your Cockapoo can retreat for rest. Make sure your home has plenty of potty training pads nearby in case of accidents, and follow up with positive reinforcement for doing his business in the designated area.
Cockapoos, which are a designer hybrid breed of a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle, generally range in size from 10 to 20 pounds and can reach between 10 and 15 inches in height. This makes them a medium sized breed rather than a large one. However, there are some Cockapoos on the larger side, depending on the size of their parents, that can grow to upwards of 25 pounds and some have even been known to exceed 30 pounds.
Cockapoos are an active breed of canine, so they need plenty of exercise to stay healthy. Depending on the age of your pup, it's important to give him/her the appropriate amount of exercise. Generally, adult Cockapoos require one hour of activity each day, which can be divided into short periods throughout the day. Walking, running, playing fetch, and other activities are ideal for this breed. Younger Cockapoos need more activity to ensure proper development and should have at least two 20-minute walks each day.
Cockapoos are a great choice for those seeking a family pet that will enjoy interaction with children. Cockapoos are known for their loving, affectionate personalities, making them an ideal pet for many families with kids. They generally do well with children due to their mild temperaments. Cockapoos are loyal and eager to please, which can make them a great companion for kids, especially since they tend to form close bonds with those they are around most often. They are also intelligent thus able to respond well to basic commands, which makes them easier to manage and train.
Cockapoos are known for being incredibly intelligent, with claims that they are among the smartest of all hybrid dog breeds. While it is difficult to scientifically measure the intelligence of a specific breed, studies have shown that poodles, a breed which Cockapoos are derived from, rank near the top of the list in intelligence tests. Not only have their intelligence been tested and measured, but their natural desire to please and eagerness to learn mean that these clever canines are relatively easy to train.
