Questions & Answers
Cockapoos are a popular mixed-breed of dogs resulting from a Poodle and a Cocker Spaniel parent. These pooches have an alert expression, a wavy/curly coat and can vary in size from Toy to Standard. They are known for being low-shedding, intelligent, active, and outgoing, making them excellent family pets. Depending on the hereditary traits of their parents, Cockapoos can inherit an affinity for water, making them great swimmers. They thrive on human companionship and need lots of exercise and stimulation.
While it is possible for any pet to potentially cause allergies, Cockapoos generally do not trigger allergies in people. This breed is particularly desirable for people who commonly experience allergic reactions when exposed to dogs since their fur does not usually produce severe symptoms. Even for those with severe allergies, many individuals can own Cockapoos without suffering allergic reactions. The breed is known for its low shedding coat which helps reduce reactions caused by dander. It is recommended that you be aware of your individual allergies and pay attention to your reactions when attempting to add a Cockapoo to your home.
Cockapoos, like all dogs, should not eat chocolate, raisins, or grapes as these are all toxic to canines and could lead to serious health issues. Additionally, onions, garlic, chives, and scallions should be avoided as these can cause anemia in dogs. High fat foods, such as junk food, butter, and pastries can be dangerous as they can lead to weight gain and pancreatitis. Avocados and macadamia nuts should also be avoided, as both of these can cause gastroenteritis and other intestinal issues.
Before getting a Cockapoo, it's important to make sure you have all of the necessary essentials in place. Start by purchasing a sturdy, comfortable crate for your pup to use as their own safe spot in the home. Then, find the right food and treats for your pup's particular dietary needs. Don't forget to stock up on a collar and leash for walks together. Invest in toys for playing together and chew items to help keep their teeth clean. Every pup also needs a bed, brush, toothbrush, and nail clippers.
Cockapoos come in three different sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard. The Toy range is typically 8-12 inches tall and typically 5-12 pounds. The Miniature range is 12-15 inches tall, and typically 12-20 pounds. The Standard range is over 15 inches tall and ranges from 20-60 pounds. Some people may believe that all Cockapoos will stay small, but weight and height will actually depend on what type of Cockapoo you choose.
Cockapoos require a moderate amount of daily exercise. Generally, they should get at least an hour of physical activity each day, though more than an hour is ideal. This can be divided into multiple shorter bouts throughout the day. Exercise for a Cockapoo should include both physical activities like walks and playtime, as well as mental stimulation like obedience classes and agility. It is important to ensure the intensity and duration of activity is appropriate for the breed's age and health. Not only is exercise important for their physical health, but Cockapoos also benefit greatly from the mental stimulation.
Cockapoos are generally quite accepting and friendly when it comes to other pets. While they may require a bit of an introduction period to get them comfortable with a new pet, once they make friends with another animal, they can be very affectionate companions. Cockapoos tend to do better when exposed to other animals at a young age, so it is recommended that you socialize your cockapoo pup with other pets early on.
The amount of time you need to train your Cockapoo each day will depend on your pup's age and level of prior training, as well as your own energy levels and schedule. Generally, short, consistent training sessions are the most effective form of training. An ideal session should be no longer than 20 minutes – try to spread out your training throughout the day with two 10-minute sessions if possible.
