Questions & Answers
Dachshunds, otherwise known as "Sausage Dogs", are an incredibly lovable breed with an interesting history. First bred in Germany centuries ago, Dachshunds were originally bred to be experts at hunting badgers and other small animals below ground. They boast an interesting body design which allows them to move quickly and effortlessly through these underground dens. Interestingly, Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard and miniature, and three coats--smooth, long, and wire-haired.
Dachshunds are considered moderately hypoallergenic. While they don't shed hair as much as other breeds, they do shed fur and dander which can trigger allergies in some people. That being said, they typically produce a much lower level of allergens than some other breeds. To reduce the risk of triggering allergies, it is best to brush the coat regularly and bathe the dog more often than other breeds. If you have any allergies, you should still spend time around a Dachshund to see if it causes a reaction before you consider adopting one.
Dachshunds require a diet that is nutrient-rich and tailored to their size and activity level. When feeding your Dachshund, look for food specifically created for the breed's size and health needs, such as formulas specifically formulated for small breeds. It is important to choose a formula that contains essential Amino Acids and Omega Fatty Acids in the right proportions as these help with nutrient absorption. Older Dachshunds will need a diet rich in fiber for digestive support.
To get ready for your new Dachshund, the first thing to do is make sure that your home is safe and comfortable for your pup! Create a designated area that is safe for your pup to roam. Pick up any small objects that could be hazardous for your pet and block off areas that could be dangerous from a pet's viewpoint. Invest in chew toys and age-appropriate items for your pup to keep them entertained. Make sure to get food and water dishes that are appropriate for a Dachshund and buy quality food and treats that are good for their nutrition.
Dachshunds are a medium-sized dog breed that were bred to hunt small game like rabbits and foxes. While they may seem small to us, they can range in size from miniature to standard and weigh between 11-32 pounds. While they aren't considered to be "big dogs" by standards, they have bigger personalities than their compact size suggests. With their big personalities and hunting spirit, they can be great protectors, great companions, and generally successful at most tasks that are given to them.
Dachshunds generally enjoy the water, although it depends on the individual. While they may enjoy paddling in the shallows, they seldom take to swimming. Dachshunds are not built for swimming like some other breeds, with their short legs and deep chest having more of a wading-type build. It is, however, possible to train them to swim, but keep in mind that they aren’t natural swimmers. With the right approach and plenty of encouragement, your Dachshund might learn to enjoy a track along the shoreline.
Dachshunds typically get along great with children of all ages and can make wonderful family pets. They are known to be loyal, affectionate, and gentle with kids. In general, Dachshunds have plenty of energy to interact and play with kids; however, their smaller size might not be suitable if children are too rough or active. Setting clear boundaries with young children when it comes to interacting with your Dachshund can help set expectations and form a positive relationship between your pup and the kids.
Training a Dachshund is not necessarily easy, but it can be made more manageable depending on the amount of effort you are willing to put in. They are an intelligent and loyal breed, so with the right techniques and knowledge, success is achievable. It is very important to establish your dominance as the 'pack leader', as this will help prevent any unwanted behavior and ensure your commands are adhered to. Additionally, ensuring the pup gets plenty of mental and physical exercise will further help with training efforts.
