Questions & Answers
Dachshunds are a small breed of dog known for their long, weenie-shaped bodies and short legs. They are a very curious breed and require lots of mental and physical stimulation. Dachshunds are typically good-natured and loyal with those they are familiar with, but can sometimes be timid when meeting new people. They do better in a home rather than an apartment, as they have a lot of energy and are prone to barking. Being a bond-seeking breed, Dachshunds generally do best when given lots of attention.
Dachshunds do not necessarily cause allergies, but they may trigger certain allergy symptoms in some individuals. Allergies can be triggered by allergens found in an animal's saliva, dander and fur. Dander and saliva may be released into the air when a pet licks its fur, or interacts with other pets, people, and objects in the home. Allergy symptoms vary from person to person, and may include itchy, watery eyes; a runny nose; sneezing; wheezing; and rash.
Dachshunds should not be fed foods that are high in fat or sugar, as these can cause health issues including obesity, diabetes, and pancreatitis. Grapes, raisins, chocolate, and raw meats are all especially harmful to dachshunds and should be avoided altogether. Additionally, small bones can be a choking hazard, and feeding table scraps should be kept to a minimum.
Before getting a Dachshund, you should purchase collar and leash, a dog bed, bowls for food and water, appropriate toys for interaction, treats, supplements, eating mat, and brushes and combs for grooming. Additionally, you may want to consider purchasing a dog pen or other kind of fencing, vaccination records and identification tags or microchips, and a dog shampoo. If your Dachshund will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you should also have a safe and secure place to keep it during extreme weather conditions.
Dachshunds are small in size, ranging from 8-9 inches tall, making them a small breed dog. Although they are small, they are still considered big dogs due to their energetic personality and bold behavior. Dachshunds never let their small size hold them back; they are tenacious by nature. Because of their size, however, they do need extra supervision when outdoors to prevent accidents. Additionally, Dachshunds are excellent companions due to their loyalty and intelligence. They make great additions to families that can provide the necessary attention and care.
Dachshunds have a unique relationship with water, as they are natural swimmers but do not usually do it just for fun. While some of them may enjoy the experience, others may be scared or uncomfortable in the water. With proper training and supervision, most Dachshunds can learn to have a positive experience with swimming, but it is important to be mindful of their unique anatomy when doing so. It may also be beneficial to provide a life vest or other floatation device so your Dachshund can safely navigate the waters.
Dachshunds are generally excellent family pets and have been known to get along very well with kids. If you have a Dachshund at home that is socialized at an early age, they typically will bond well with kids. Not only do Dachshunds bond and enjoy spending time with their human families, but they are also very curious by nature and love exploring. They also have a strong protective instinct which can come in handy when children are around your Dachshund may become their guardian and alert you when they feel something is wrong.
Yes, Dachshunds are considered to be quite intelligent. They can display a variety of unique personalities, coupled with remarkable problem-solving abilities. From adapting to changes in their environment, to learning sophisticated commands, Dachshunds have demonstrated their capability to learn at an advanced level. Furthermore, they are excellent at understanding and responding to commands, so much so, that they are often identified as strong competition in the world of agility and obedience training.
